Falls The Shadow
The perfect integration of architecture, dance, and 3D-mapping images is highly recommended. The work, titled "Falls The Shadow," is a collaboration between American ballet theater dancer Daniel Simkin and The Guggenheim Museume. The Guggenheim Museume's Works & Process commissioned exhibition, organized by American ballet theater dancer Daniel Simkin, while devoid of acerbic pessimism, does convey how easily our actions can be erased and how much we desire them to persevere. This 30-minute piece perfectly illustrates the dance: the movements are clearly visible, like breathing in the snow.
Daniel Simkin's father, Dmitrij, was a stage designer who used motion sensors to imprint the shadow of the dance on the floor of the rotunda in a brilliant variety of forms. He wisely chooses lines rather than blobs to emphasize the trajectory of movement. Imagine a craggy hand like Edward Gorey pulling a strand of hair that fanned out along the ground and then seeped into a wall, or iron filings pulsating around a magnet (body). Whenever the dance gathers strength or the four dancers become entangled, the lines condense and their organic colors deepen. Choreography is by Alejandro Cerrudo, Artist-in-Residence of the Hubbard Street Dance Company in Chicago.
Viewers will be viewed from the museum's iconic spiral ramp, and viewers will stand on the edge from the sixth ring downward. Verses as colorless and bright as the light reflected off the surface of the water, drifting up the spiral-shaped walls, skimming the words of the doom-filled poem that gave the dance and the light show its name.
