David · Ornstein said Jurgen · Klopp rejected the United States Soccer Federation's proposal for a vacancy as men's head coach for the national team.
Well, with the excitement and hype building around Klopp's potential to take over dominance and lead the Stars and Stripes at the 2026 World Cup, that dream has been dashed. The United States Air Force confirmed a report earlier today that made contact with the former Liverpool boss over the manager's position. According to Ornstein, Klopp reaffirmed his commitment to take a break from the sport, much to the frustration of USMNT fans.
Team United States fired Greg · Berhalt after losing the 2024 Copa America. After losing to Panama and Uruguay, the team unceremoniously failed to advance to the knockout stage. Its only victory came against Bolivia, the lowest-ranked team in the competition this year.
Klopp was never a real possibility
Jurgen Klopp said goodbye to Liverpool at the end of his last Premier League season after nine memorable and successful years at the club. During his farewell trip, Klopp mentioned that out of respect for Liverpool, he would never again coach another United Kingdom club. What's more, he says he needs a break from the sport after a tough competition over the past few years with the giants of Manchester City and Pep Guardiola (and Mikel · Arteta for the past two years).
Well, the first point gives USMNT fans some hope. Team United States does not play in the Premier League! Don't worry about Pep's performance at Concacaf or the 2026 World Cup... Unless Pep Guardiola wants to coach a national team in two years.
It's just that things aren't that simple, and they've never been that simple. Reading between the lines, this may just be due diligence. You have to at least ask Klopp if he's interested. He's the best coach at the moment, and for many, he's still the best coach in the world. But, that's it. He said no. However, Ornstein said that even after being told that he was not interested, the federation was interested in hiring him.
Matt · Crocker, director of United States Soccer Sports, said there was a sense of urgency in this new coach search, given the stakes in 2026. There are no iconic international moments for this generation of players, and there is no better place to host the World Cup than on home soil.
