At the end of 1977, Huang Kecheng, who was over seventy years old, returned to the army and became an adviser to the Central Military Commission. Since he is almost blind in both eyes, he relies on his secretary for his daily work. But even so, Huang Kecheng still tirelessly made suggestions for army building, hoping that the general discipline would recover at an early date.
At this time, Hu Yaobang, then head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, visited the house five times, hoping that Huang Kecheng could take up the post of executive secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. At first, Huang Kecheng hesitated. But under Chen Yun's guidance, he understood his responsibility and mission as an old comrade. So, Huang Kecheng resolutely took up this burden.
At Huang Kecheng's insistence, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection promulgated a series of strict disciplines. However, during the "Cultural Revolution", Zhang Pingkai was imprisoned for 10 years, and the more than 200,000 words of articles he wrote reminiscing about Peng Dehuai were confiscated and destroyed. Although he has been rehabilitated, Zhang Pingkai still can't calm the hidden hatred in his stomach, and he tore the rehabilitation decision document to shreds on the spot, shouting and scolding at the staff.
In the face of Zhang Pingkai's anger, Huang Kecheng not only did not get angry, but deeply understood. He asked someone to reprint the document and personally stamped his "lion's head" seal on it, which made Zhang Pingkai relieved. This seal was exactly what Huang Kecheng used when he issued an emergency combat order, and Zhang Pingkai naturally accepted it gladly.
However, the most surprising thing is that Huang Kecheng did not write a rehabilitation report for himself. On one occasion, two subordinates reported this to him. After hearing this, Huang Kecheng smiled and said: "I'm not in a hurry, I just have work to do now." It seems that in the heart of this old revolutionary man, personal gains and losses are fundamentally insignificant, and what matters is the cause of the revolution.
Perhaps, it is this noble character of indifference to fame and fortune that makes everyone respect Huang Kecheng. Even a chess and card person like Zhang Pingkai, after catching a glimpse of the "lion's head" seal stamped by Huang Kecheng, immediately lost his anger and signed his name without complaint.
