The birds of the Song family come to us to sing
There is a place in Shanghai that attracts the attention of the world, and that is the former residence of Vice President Song Qingling on Huaihai Middle Road.
Since the end of 1962, I have lived at No. 1843 Huaihai Middle Road, which is the office of the Political Research Office of the East China Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. We bachelors live downstairs in the semi-basement. Next door to No. 1843 lives Lieutenant General Liu Xiansheng, and next door to it is Soong Ching Ling's home. The Song family's big trees are taller than ours, and there are more birds than ours. The wild birds recognize the trees and do not recognize them. The magpies in the Song family's compound often come to our compound to report the good news, and the birds in the Song family's compound often come to our compound to sing. I "sniff the birds" every morning. I once wrote, "Before a person rises and a bird cries, and after a person sleeps at night", that is about middle age, when I lived here, I was in my twenties, and it was generally after a person cried a bird.
In the first year I lived next to the Song family's compound, I didn't see the gate open, let alone a guard at their door. I'm a little puzzled: why is there no one standing guard at the door of the vice president?
Later, a middle-aged woman carried a large bouquet of flowers in a basket, and as soon as she rang the electric bell, a soldier immediately opened the small door in the gate, took the flowers, and did not pay for them, nor did she say much. At that time, there were very few flowers, and I guess the Song family made reservations all year round. There is a guard post for the vice president of the country, but it is inside the door, not outside. This may be because her old man loves the ordinary.
On another occasion to welcome foreign guests, the East China Bureau arranged for us young people to stand at the entrance of the alley between the Song family and the 18th grain store in the west. Suddenly a person came in, and instead of looking forward like us, he looked forward, backward, left and right, and even looked up, which was a little strange. "Isn't it a villain?" My colleague told me to go and talk to my colleagues from the Security Section, who had come with me. I ran into Chen Pixian's old guard Zhao Zunyu, and after I told him, he told Director Yao Zhicheng about it. Then, the two of them came with me very seriously, and when they were about to reach the entrance of the alley, they both laughed. Lao Yao said, "Just let him stand behind you!" Lao Zhao made a gesture and said a word: "Song." "I understand: it's the one who guards the Song family's compound. Since then, we have also learned to consciously defend the Song family compound, especially pay attention to the bamboo fences on the west and south sides of the Song family compound, and don't let the bad guys get in.
got acquainted with Soong Ching-ling's old secretary
A few years later, I met Sui Xuefang, Soong Ching-ling's old secretary. At this time, I had married and moved to Building 2, near Huaihai Road, Lane 21, Wuxing Road. What about his family? It lives on Huaihai Middle Road, which is directly opposite Wuxing Road. In winter, the sycamore leaves fall, and the two families can gesture across the road. We can also watch Premier Zhou and others accompany foreign heads of state from the airport to the Jin Jiang Hotel in an open-top car at home. At this time, Lao Sui's hands and feet were already inconvenient, he had a disability certificate, and he could buy vegetables in the small vegetable market at the entrance of No. 4 Wuxing Road without queuing. "Not queuing" was a great deal back then. Those who are familiar with the sixties and seventies of the last century know that it is not always possible to buy a menu with a ticket, and you have to get up at four o'clock in the morning to line up with broken baskets and small bricks. Lao Sui saw that I often had too much trouble queuing up with my children, so he took the initiative to buy vegetables for me. When buying good food, we always have to say a few words to each other, discuss national affairs, talk about family trivialities, and analyze the rumors in society.
Lao Sui's wife works at the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau. The couple gave birth to two daughters, who were deeply loved by Song Qingling and often left delicious food for these two children. Once, Lao Sui talked about a story that touched me. Not long after the liberation of the country, Secretary Sui received a phone call, and the other party said: "I am Chen Geng, and I want to visit Mrs. Sun." Lao Sui reported the phone to Song, and Song said, "I don't know this person, it's gone!" Lao Sui told Song Qingling that Chen Geng was a general (no military rank was awarded at that time). Song Qingling still disagrees with Chen Geng. Lao Sui had no choice but to tell the famous Chen Geng what Mrs. Song meant. After a while, Chen Geng called again, saying that he was the one who was rescued from the Kuomintang prison by Soong Qingling himself. Song Qingling immediately recalled it and immediately agreed to him to come. Here's the thing: Song Qingling originally went to rescue Liao Chengzhi in prison. Liao knew that there was a man named Chen Geng next to him in prison, and although Liao didn't know Chen, he knew that Chen was a communist, so he asked Song to save Chen Geng first, and then save himself. Song first rescued Chen Geng, a communist she was not familiar with. The rescue is only for the "heavy way", faith, no selfishness, worthy of admiration!
Song Qingling has lived in Shanghai for a long time. Her former residence is a symbol of kindness, a symbol of civilization, and the brilliance of Shanghai's image. Shanghai is crowded with people. To our young people at that time, they were teachers. I have visited many teachers, and the helpful Sui Xuefang is one of them.
Remembering Yang Zhenning's first return to China
I didn't intend to dictate about Yang Zhenning's first return to China in 1971, but recently the media wrote that Yang Zhenning's first return to China in 1971 was different from what I knew, and in some points, it could even be said to be very different. This prompted me to use the opportunity to remark a few things.
When Yang Zhenning returned to China for the first time, China and the United States did not establish diplomatic relations and there was no navigation. He flew from New York to Taiwan for transit, and then to Shanghai via Hong Kong. At that time, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait were facing each other, and Yang Zhenning was a world celebrity, and the news of his visit to Taiwan could not be kept secret. Taiwan knows that he is coming to the mainland, will it take any measures against him? He thought twice that the plane in Taiwan would have to be parked for a long time, and the passengers on the plane going to Hong Kong would have to get off the plane and rest. However, Yang Zhenning insisted on not getting off the plane. Because the plane belonged to United States, it was not convenient for the Taiwan authorities to board the US plane and take any action. As a result, he flew from Taiwan to Hong Kong safely.
When he was about to return to his motherland after more than 20 years of absence, he remembered that China was "breaking the four olds" and opposing fancy clothes. However, this great scientist does not know what it means to be "dressed in fancy clothes". It was the hot season, so he asked a friend for advice and bought himself two short-sleeved shirts in light and light colors.
Yang Zhenning's younger brother and sister are all in Shanghai, what gifts should I buy for my younger brothers and sisters? A friend in Hong Kong told him: "Bicycles are very expensive in the mainland, and you can't buy them with money, so you have to buy them with a ticket." So, he bought two bicycles and brought them back to Shanghai. When I arrived in Shanghai, I learned that the two bicycles sold in Hong Kong were made in Shanghai, but the price was twice that of Shanghai. Add in the shipping fee, and that's more than twice as much. He and his wife Du Zhili both laughed when they found out.
Yang Zhenning came to Shanghai to visit his sick father. His father, Yang Wuzhi, was a professor of mathematics at Fudan University. Well, what about his father's colleagues? In his eyes, it is his elders. No matter how famous he was or how high his level was, he treated his father's colleagues as elders. The first person I saw was Professor Su Buqing, who reverently called "Teacher Su" and then bowed deeply. Mr. Su, who had just been "liberated" after the fight, and the people present were very moved.
While visiting relatives, he also discussed academic issues with Fudan mathematician Gu Chaohao and others in Shanghai. Later, after he wrote his thesis, he took the initiative to publish it in the Journal of Fudan University. This was rare at the time. I distinctly remember that in the caption of his paper, he also expressed his gratitude to Gu Chaohao and several other Fudan teachers.
Yang Zhenning made several presentations in Shanghai, I don't know. I only remember listening to his report twice, maybe just twice. For the first time, I couldn't remember whether it was in the Jin Jiang Hotel (Yang lives in Jin Jiang) or the International Hotel, or the Overseas Chinese Hotel next to the International Hotel, it seems to be the Overseas Chinese Hotel. The meeting was greeted by Han Yangshan, who was well-mannered. Yang Zhenning and his wife Du Zhili both stood up to express their gratitude. Yang spoke at length.
The second time was to listen to academic reports. The report meeting is still presided over by Han Yangshan. The topic of Yang's lecture was "New Progress in Physics Research in United States". In fact, he also spoke about Europe. There were about 30 people listening. We went with Cai Huaixin, Su Rukeng, and five or six other people from the Department of Physics of Fudan University. For reasons of secrecy or security, Yang seems to be giving lectures in a small classroom in a primary or secondary school in Xuhui District. There is a blackboard in the classroom, and in front of the blackboard there is a statue of Chairman Mao that is nearly one meter high. Yang is personable, talking and writing and walking around.
When I walked around, I rubbed the nose of the statue several times, which was so awkward that even those of us who were used to it felt embarrassed, but no one said a word "no". Professor Yang Zhenning also took out several cameras that were only owned by TV stations in Shanghai at that time, and were not generally available by private individuals, to record for everyone.
Mr. and Mrs. Yang stayed in Shanghai for about a month, and his father's condition was basically stable, and it was time for him to return to United States. According to our journalistic rules: keep it secret when you arrive, and report it when you leave. There is a question of title in the report. What to call verbally, it's not too much of a problem, anyway, the wind is blowing away, and it's inconvenient to change your words when you go to the newspaper. Therefore, after the person concerned wrote a manuscript of several hundred words, he handed it over to Yang Zhenning for revision, and asked him clearly: "What is the name good?" "
After reading it, Yang Zhenning picked up the pen and added the title: "American-Chinese physicist Dr. Yang Zhenning Returns to Shanghai to Visit His Father's Illness", which was published in the lower left of the front page of Jiefang Daily the next day. Many people were moved by it, but the good thing is the word "China". He has been admitted to the United States, so how can we casually say that he is a "Chinese physicist"? He wrote it himself, and it would be easy to do. Yang was the first Chinese-American scholar to return to China to visit his family after 1949. His move is a good inspiration for latecomers, such as Lin Jiaqiao, Lee Tsung-dao and other university scholars.
This should be the end of the story, however, there is a story that is not told in a panic. Li Qiankuan, the director of the China Film Association, personally told me that he once asked Yang Zhenning to watch a movie in a small area. There is such a scene: Zhou Enlai sent physicist Zhang Wenyu to the prison to visit the war criminal Du Yuming. Zhang asked, "Are you Du Yuming?" Answer: "Yes." Asked, "Do you have a daughter named Du Zhili?" Answer: "Yes." Asked: "Is your son-in-law Yang Zhenning?" Answer: "I'm sorry they ......" Yang Zhenning saw this, and cried loudly in public......
Why is Yang Zhenning crying? Do you understand psychology if you study physics? Is my digression a continuation of the topic?
