Preface to the Chinese edition
I am very honored to see the Chinese translation of the Oxford Dictionary of Sociology. This dictionary is the standard reference in the field of English-language sociology, and I hope that its translation will become equally important in the rapidly growing field of Chinese sociology. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Yunsong Chen, Dr. Zhonglin Bai and their team for their hard work.
Sociology originated in many different parts of the world, but its expansion in the twentieth century was mainly focused on North America and Western Europe. The theories of Emile· Durkheim, Max· Weber, and Tarcott· Parsons shaped the discipline for much of the twentieth century, until the second half of the twentieth century when more diverse perspectives emerged, with issues of gender, race, and the environment gaining attention. It was at this time that sociology also became more international. The globalization of economic and political power, and the associated independence of the Global South, meant that scholars around the world were beginning to engage with sociological ideas and contribute to the development of the discipline. Chinese sociologists have played an important role in the renewal of this sociological trend, not only producing new theoretical perspectives, but also undertaking important empirical research. Chinese scholars have become important visiting scholars and long-term staff members of European and American universities, and Chinese universities welcome foreign scholars to help build truly global disciplines. Sociology thrives on university collaborations that transcend borders and political differences. I look forward to the translation of this dictionary as a reinforcement of this collaboration and help us build a better world."

Preface to the Chinese translation
"There is no rhetoric in the country, and there is no culture at all!" One hundred and eight years ago, Mr. Lu Erkui, the first compiler of modern Chinese dictionaries, the editor-in-chief of Ciyuan of the Commercial Press, wrote an article entitled "Ciyuan Shuolu" (Oriental Magazine, Vol. 12, No. 4, 1915). This shows that the dictionary of modernization has played a very important role in China's modernization cause over the past century. As the birthplace of China's modern cultural publishing industry, the Commercial Press has also opened the road of compilation and compilation of magnificent dictionaries. From dictionaries, dictionaries, to specialists, encyclopedic dictionaries, and even comprehensive dictionaries, the commercial press has built a kingdom of reference books.
To this day, the Commercial Press's lexicon business is still moving into the depth of the discipline. The Oxford Dictionary of Sociology, which we organized young scholars of Chinese world sociology to translate, is not only a sail of the commercial press's reference books, but also hopes to contribute to the construction of sociology disciplines in China. A mature discipline, in addition to the societies and journals of the discipline, also needs to have mature discipline manuals, discipline research guides, and discipline dictionaries. In the process of constructing the independent knowledge system of Chinese sociology, we need to understand Western sociology, learn from and absorb the excellent achievements in the development of its discipline, and discard them. After comparison and argumentation, we have chosen this dictionary as the first choice for translation and introduction. On the one hand, the University of Oxford's series of dictionaries in the field of humanities and social sciences is well-known in the publishing world and even in the English-speaking world, and on the other hand, the dictionary also has a good reputation in the international sociological community. Based on the above reasons, we communicated with the editor-in-chief of the original book and Oxford University Press, and obtained the affirmation of the editor-in-chief and the authorization of Oxford Press. While participating in the translation of the main text, the two presiding translators also undertook the translation and supplementation of the preface and supplementary text outside the main text, as well as the overall drafting of the dictionary. The whole translation, proofreading, editing and publishing work lasted more than two years, and thanks to all the personnel involved in the translation, review and editing, we are well aware that a reference book with the participation of many scholars can ensure the wide acceptance of the translation on the one hand, and on the other hand, there must be more or less shortcomings. In addition, although the entries in the dictionary are relatively comprehensive, the introduction of Chinese and non-Western sociological achievements is still far from sufficient, and the interpretation of some entries inevitably carries the personal value tendencies of the original editors and the prejudices and even fallacies of Western discourse, which need to be screened and paid attention to by mainland readers.
