preface

Text/Ma Weichi

Calligraphy is Yao Yuan's main subject, and painting is a favorite of his heart, and he has been doing this hobby for more than ten years. I have not been framed by the training of modeling techniques, I have not been framed by the imagination, I have always watched, often listened, and understood with my heart, although I did not deliberately grasp it, but I have formed a high degree of aesthetic awareness. Whether it is the desk games of ancient literati, the color composition of modern paintings, the occasional dead wood, residual lotus, flowers, melons and fruits, the photos of friends in the circle of friends, or the big rooster in the year, there is no superfluous motive, no utilitarian heart, only painting joy, free and contented.

Yao Yuan, known as "Wuxin", I think these two words reflect his state of mind of transcending the self and returning to nature, and also in line with his original intention of "playing" in painting: pure, not pleasing and not deliberate. Under a sense of non-action, devoting oneself to the realization of the present, like a baby, unstained, infinite enthusiasm, is the belief that art is integrated into life.

This retrospective spans Yao Yuan's life journey from the age of "not being confused" to "knowing the destiny of heaven", and traces back to his painting career in the past ten years, showing the artist's journey from the stage of exploration to gradual comprehension, internalization, and finally to maturity. The calligraphy lines are incorporated into the painting, and the autonomy of the brush and ink is the subject of deep cultivation and tempering in painting. The concept of time runs throughout, this creative concept is multi-dimensional and multi-level presentation, pen and paper are only the creative carrier, and the process is more like constantly seeking, experimenting and enjoying the fun of art, the joy of creation, so its portrait of its words, just like its people, always maintain the harmony of the original intention, so that everything returns to the state of nature. The freedom of "non-action" bears the fruit of "promising", and this wisdom is integrated between his works and life, and his artistic path is not only the pursuit of beauty, but also the exploration of culture and philosophy.

Yao Yuan's painting comes from the heart, and he paints with feelings, neither sticking to traditional methods nor copying too much. He paints people, still lifes, flowers, zodiac signs, animals, and objects in life are the content of his brush.

Whatever he wants to paint is what he thinks and understands about his temperament at different times. Its chapter layout is sparse and dense alternately orderly. The shape seems to be similar and unlike, relaxed and sparse, sometimes a few strokes, sometimes a few overlapping strokes, and comes out with the pen. The ink color is thick and light, and it is just right and harmonious.

Yao Yuan is diligent, and the paintings that everyone sees are a small part of his countless paintings, which are also selected by him, and his paintings seem to be unintentional, but in fact they are very intentional and casual natural releases.
