Hua Tian was passing the 21st group B hurdle when a referee suddenly appeared in front of the obstacle, causing Hua Tian's horses to be frightened and jump over the hurdle after jumping to the left side. Although the horse successfully crossed the obstacle, it accidentally rubbed off the flagpole on the side of the obstacle during the crossing. According to the rules of the game, the referee awarded a penalty of 15 points for this mistake.

After the race, Hua Tian recalled in an interview: "At that time, a referee happened to be running on the side of the horse, and I felt that it really interfered with the attention of 'Chocolate', and finally the knee dropped the flag. Hua Tian said that "chocolate" usually walks neatly through obstacles, "It's not normal for it to hesitate for a moment." Nothing like this has ever happened before, so this time it was a bit of a surprise to me. ”

In the face of the penalty controversy, the Chinese team immediately lodged a protest appeal. So far, the FEI has not issued an announcement on this matter.
China's Sun Huadong regretfully withdrew from the competition
On July 28, the second event of the equestrian eventing at the Paris Olympics is underway, the cross-country race. China's Sun Huadong retired due to health issues.
According to the Chinese team, during the pre-race horse inspection, Sun Huadong's horse "Lady" was swollen due to a left front leg injury, and it was confirmed that the veterinarian team could not continue the race.
This concludes Sun Huadong's second Olympic journey, finishing 36th in the previous day's eventing dressage. Previously, in 2021, he partnered with Hua Tian and Bao Yingfeng and won the ninth place in the equestrian eventing team event at the Tokyo Olympics. Sun Huadong is also the only Chinese eventing rider other than Hua Tian to participate in consecutive Olympic Games.
