According to Cambodian media sources, China is still the largest source of investment in Cambodia, according to the report of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, in the first half of 2024, Chinese investors have invested about 1.389 billion US dollars in Cambodia, equivalent to 42.64% of the total investment.
Dr. Hung Wanna, an economist at the Royal College of Cambodia, believes that as Cambodia-China relations are strengthened into a comprehensive strategic partnership, investors from China will play an indispensable role in ensuring Cambodia's economic growth and resilience.
"It is undeniable that Cambodia needs investors from all over the world, and the largest source of investment for Cambodia is still China," he said. ”
In addition, he said, as you know, once Chinese investors exit, they will find that there is not much investment from other countries.
He said that in order to attract more investors from China and other countries, the government must simplify the process and reduce the barriers for investors to come and invest. In addition, this year is the Year of People-to-People Exchange between Cambodia and Chinese to promote tourism, connectivity and closer cooperation between the two countries.
China's major projects in Cambodia include the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, the Phnom Penh-Westport Expressway, Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, Tak Chong International Airport, and the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway under construction.
