According to Southern Metropolis Daily, recently, a 27-year-old Chinese tourist was swept away by waves while swimming in the beach area in front of the Tann Terrace restaurant in Karon Town, Phuket Prefecture, Thailand, and eventually died. It is understood that the area of the incident is marked as a dangerous area not suitable for swimming.
Missing Chinese tourists
As previously reported, Karen Town Mayor Jedt told Thai media that the 27-year-old Chinese man disappeared at 19:30 on July 25. Upon questioning with the lifeguard, it was learned that on July 25, a Chinese couple came to rent a surfboard and returned it at 18:30. At 7:30 p.m., the man went to play alone in the sea, after which the man's wife stated that she could not find her husband. On the afternoon of July 29, a staff member of the Third District of the Phuket Marine Rights Protection Center in Thailand told reporters that at about 9:25 that day, fishermen found a male body around the rocks near Krua Thai Beach.
Search and rescue scene
On July 30, the Chinese Consulate General in Songkhla issued an announcement confirming that a Chinese tourist who was swept away by waves while swimming at Karon Beach in Phuket Province at night was eventually killed. Chinese tourists are also reminded to take precautions against swimming drowning accidents. At present, Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi are in the rainy season, and due to the influence of the southwest monsoon climate, the beach is not suitable for entering the water due to high winds and waves. Although warning red flags are often planted on the beaches, it is not uncommon for tourists to ignore warnings and be swept away by rip currents, and many people have died.

When visiting the beach, people usually like to play on the shore and reef, but when it comes to heavy rainfall or strong winds, beautiful beaches can be risky.
What is Offshore Flow?
Rip currents are when seawater moves strongly and narrowly toward the sea near shore. It flows towards the ocean and perpendicular to the beach and usually does not last long. Due to the large volume of water and the narrowness of the current, the current velocity of the shore can reach speeds of up to 2 m/s – enough to push an adult into the depths of the ocean in a short period of time.
How to identify offshore currents?
If you see a break between two white sprays of calm water, and the color is darker than the surrounding area, it is likely that the rip current is occurring.
How to escape offshore currents?
1. Swim sideways parallel to the shore. The rip current is not wide, only 10-30 meters.
2. If the resistance of the current is too great to swim out laterally, relax your body, drift with the current, and wait until you are washed to a place where the current is stable, and then swim out horizontally and return to the shore.
