That's when he saw teammate McCullough step back from the lead group to help him catch up with the man in front of him.

Wilde had hoped to make history in Paris by becoming the first New Zealand to win a gold medal in a men's triathlon in 20 years.

However, he missed out on the gold medal in heartbreaking fashion, leading by 15 seconds at one point, but was overtaken by Yee 300 meters from the finish.

Wellington land taxes have skyrocketed by nearly 20% and homeowners are wailing

Recently, homeowners across New Zealand have complained about the large increase in land taxes.

While the major cities have risen sharply, this year's situation has been as follows: Wellington> Christchurch > Auckland.

Wellingtonians chose the Green Mayor, which has also led to double-digit increases in land taxes year after year.

Stuff reports that some Wellington homeowners are now considering moving to sell their homes.

This year, Wellington City Council is up 18.5 per cent, Hart City Council is up 16.9 per cent and Greater Wellington Regional Council is up 19.8 per cent.

For the City of Wellington, the 18.5 per cent increase follows three consecutive years of average increases of 12.8 per cent, 8.8 per cent and 12.3 per cent.

It can be seen that double-digit annual growth in Wellington has become the norm.

Lucas Monge, a local resident of Petone, said he was seriously considering selling his house and didn't know how to afford it.

"The system collapsed...... I have two kids and don't really know what to do. ”

He said his family's land tax had increased by about $850 this year.

On a weekly basis, the weekly property tax burden has exceeded NZ$100. "It's not sustainable."

Some Chinese netizens also posted local Xindi tax bills:

Netizens said, "After buying a house for three years, the land tax has risen from 4100 to 5300 to 6300 this year, why don't the council grab it directly?" I don't know where the reduction has gone if I have laid off employees and cut expenses......"

There are also Auckland netizens who left messages saying that in contrast, the increase in Auckland's land tax can be regarded as conscientious. For a house of more than 2 million, the land tax is a little less than that of a house in Wellington of 1 million.

34,000 Auckland homeowners are in arrears on their land taxes

In Auckland, there are also many people who feel that the pressure on land taxes is too great. More than 34,000 Auckland homeowners failed to pay their land taxes on time last year.

Oakland City Council CFO Ross Tucker said that at the end of the previous financial year, 95 per cent of council taxes were paid in full and 5 per cent (about 34,000 people) were in arrears to varying degrees.

The City Council is aware of the current cost-of-living crisis and more people are struggling to pay their bills.

"This is an increase of about 2.3% compared to the previous year, indicating that there are more people struggling."

He said the city council advises anyone in difficulty to reach out as soon as possible so that they can work with them to figure it out.

Failure to do so for too long will result in enforcement measures.

Later this month, Auckland City Council will auction off a property as homeowners owe up to $318,000 in taxes.

This vacant property in Otara has not paid land tax for 19 years. "We tried to contact the homeowner for many years without success and had to go through the legal process of auctioning."

Tucker said that the initial arrears were about $30,000, but later due to the accumulation of fines and land taxes, the arrears were sky-high.

"We want to avoid mandatory auctions, which is really a last resort."

When people miss a property tax payment, the council sends reminder notifications and automated phone reminders.
