Drivers in the Northern Territory are able to enjoy such discounts because they benefit from the local DriveSafe program, which offers more than $600 in subsidies, including $500 worth of driving lessons taught by qualified instructors.

Regardless of the cost of the course, Victoria is actually the cheapest state to get a full driver's license. The state waives some test fees for first-time applicants for a driver's licence through the Motorist Package and Safe Driver Program, and similar Safe Driver discounts are available in WA and Tasmania.

While the price of a professional driving course may feel high for a young novice driver, getting the right instruction at the start can avoid the extra expense of repeating the test in the long run.

"In addition, in some states such as NSW, Queensland and the ACT, professional driving lessons can help you get your licence faster through a one-hour to three-hour logbook reward scheme," Ezlicence said.

However, even without considering the cost of the course, South Australia still tops the list. In South Australia, the average course cost is $109 per hour, which is $29 more than the national average, for a total cost of $649.
