It's at Poyang Lake! The large army of summer migratory birds began to migrate south, and the winter and summer migratory birds are about to "change the guard"

According to the monitoring data of the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve Management Station, in recent years, the number of summer migratory birds from Southeast Asia and Guangxi has been 200,000-250,000, mainly herons, including 16 species such as egrets, herons, night herons, and pond herons. After the beginning of autumn every year, summer migratory birds migrate to the south in batches according to the water level, climate and food changes of Poyang Lake.

Yuan Ziqi, a staff member of the Wucheng Conservation and Management Station of the Administration of Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi Province: When we were monitoring plovers on September 5, the water level of Poyang Lake had just receded, and tidal flats were exposed in many places. These tidal flats are well suited for foraging for some plovers, including egrets, like the typical summer migratory bird, which are also well suited for foraging in such conditions.

After the beginning of autumn, due to climate and food reasons, the migration time of summer migratory birds in Poyang Lake this year is a little later than in previous years. A small number of summer migratory birds have migrated south, but large groups remain in Poyang Lake.

Yuan Ziqi, staff member of Wucheng Conservation Management Station of Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve Administration, Jiangxi Province: One is related to temperature, and the other is related to water level. As soon as the water level recedes, the moisture of the soil in many places is caused by microorganisms, such as some of the insects they eat. One is that the food source is very good, and the other is the current temperature, which is still above 35°C.

According to the analysis of monitoring data from previous years, summer migratory birds generally complete their southward migration in late September and early October, and return to Poyang Lake to breed in the following spring. After the summer migratory birds migrate south, the winter migratory birds also arrive at Poyang Lake.

Yuan Ziqi, staff member of Wucheng Conservation and Management Station of Jiangxi Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve Administration: According to previous observations, around mid-October, there will be some winter migratory birds that come relatively early, such as Oriental white storks and white cranes. Then in November, most of the winter migratory birds start to come here.

From the end of September to mid-October this year, Poyang Lake will present a lively scene of "changing the guard" of migratory birds in winter and summer. To this end, the Protected Area Administration has made full preparations for the arrival of winter migratory birds while sending off summer migratory birds.

Yuan Ziqi, staff member of Wucheng Conservation and Management Station of Jiangxi Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve Administration: We were in the dry season
We will conduct monitoring every 8th, that is, on the 8th, 18th, and 28th of each month, and we will check the distribution of the birds and whether these birds are injured. The other one is that we have a daily patrol where we check to see if anyone is illegally hunting these birds.
