UAVs threaten airport security, laser countermeasures offer new solutions?

Recently, a news that Tianjin Binhai Airport drones affect aircraft take-off and landing has attracted attention from all walks of life.

The incident began on September 11. As of 23 o'clock that night, 29 flights were delayed, 8 flights were cancelled, 32 flights were diverted to the field, and more than 3,000 passengers were affected. Many netizens said that some flights were diverted to Beijing, Jinan and other places. According to eyewitnesses at the airport, there are suspected phased array radars present at the airport.

Later, according to official sources, Tianjin Binhai Airport was affected by public safety reasons caused by drones. However, it is unbelievable that at the same place on September 12, the drone came again. On September 12, Tianjin Binhai Airport was once again delayed in aircraft take-off and landing, which made people suspect that there was an element of "deliberate provocation".

Normally speaking, UAS systems that operate in compliance have settings such as "electronic fences", and cannot take off in normal ways in no-fly zones such as airports. Therefore, the drone may have been purchased and cracked through some illegal channel, which is commonly known as "black flying".

There is a view that the occurrence of this incident proves that the airport has also neglected its preventive management. However, in fact, drone protection has always been very difficult, taking Moscow, which is thousands of miles away from the Russian-Ukrainian border, as an example, during the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in recent years, under the full operation of the Russia air defense system, drone invasion of Moscow's airspace still occurs from time to time. It can be seen that it is technically difficult to protect pervasive small aircraft with a stationary system.

The laser anti-UAV, as one of the important UAV countermeasures, has also attracted attention again. An investor asked Jiangxi Lianchuang Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd.: Due to public safety reasons caused by drones, Tianjin Binhai Airport has a large area of flights that cannot take off and land, can your company's light blade laser anti-drone products be deployed in the airport for rapid countermeasures, safe and effective response to such black flight incidents? Will you take this opportunity to expand your cooperation with other airports?

In this regard, Lianchuang Optoelectronics gave a positive answer. Lianchuang Optoelectronics said that the company's light blade series laser anti-drone products are a new concept directed energy product that uses laser energy beams to attack. At the same time, combined with the "low-altitude defense system command and control platform application software" developed by Zhongjiu Optoelectronics, it provides a complete "clear space" solution, and has carried out preliminary cooperation negotiations with many airports.

It is understood that Zhongjiu Optoelectronics and Zhongjiu Research Institute, subsidiaries of Lianchuang Optoelectronics, take the research and development of laser countermeasure systems as the core business direction and expand to high-end laser devices and lasers. Among them, the "Lightblade" series is tailor-made for countermeasure UAVs, and has completed the development of Lightblade-I.B and the optimization and upgrade of Lightblade-II.

On the basis of the previous generation, the Lightblade-I.B has higher energy transmission efficiency, stronger system reliability, better environmental adaptability, and more convenient operation and maintenance. In April 2024, the Lightblade-I laser anti-drone product has been shipped from Shanghai Post Customs to a country in the Middle East, and the first export order has been successfully issued. The Lightblade-II has completed the re-selection of the main laser, improved the target strike efficiency, and optimized the power supply, thermal control system, motion tracking and aiming functions. As early as February 2023, Zhongjiu Optoelectronics Industry Research Institute organized a review meeting for the development project of the Lightblade-II laser countermeasure system, and the review expert group unanimously agreed that the Lightblade-II laser countermeasure system project passed the review and was concluded.

In addition, according to the company's disclosure, in July, the new special products designed and developed by the holding subsidiary of Lianchuang Optoelectronics passed the factory review of a special agency and entered the procurement catalog of products in its special fields, but Lianchuang Optoelectronics did not show more detailed information, which also gave people room for reverie.

In the confrontation with UAVs, it is believed that laser weapons can eventually solve the problem of miniaturization and portability, and become a weapon for countering UAVs by carrying them on a variety of combat platforms and integrating them into the air defense system.

Can Lianchuang Optoelectronics' related laser protection products reach further cooperation with existing airports to provide more effective solutions for sensitive public facilities?
