Located 70 meters above the Philippine coastline, SLIC Architects' quarry residences are a set of cubic blocks. The cubes cling to the topography of the site and are made up of bricks, both structural and decorative, arranged in intricate geometric patterns. The textured bricks complement the rugged jungle environment, further highlighting the unique personality, with a green landscape every few meters inside and out.
Despite its remote location, the solar-powered house was tilted at a 40° angle, which made construction difficult. The architects divided the core space into separate and interconnected shared and private villas.
The Quarry Residences consist of a two-storey cliffside common space and six villas scattered downward. With a living room, dining room, kitchen, outdoor lounge and a 10-metre swimming pool, the shared space is ideal for private gatherings, while each villa has its own suite, roof terrace, garden and spacious balcony. The villas are staggered to offer intimate sunrise views, while the brick paths between the villas become contemplative flowing spaces.
For the interior design, the SLIC architectural design team sought to complement the simplicity of the form, matching the creamy white lime plastered walls with the limestone floors of the books, echoing the limestone soil foundation of the site. From dining tables and kitchen islands to cabinets and chairs, most of the furniture is custom-made.
The client wanted load-bearing bricks to be used as a low-maintenance finish, and the SLIC architectural design team worked with the supplier on pigments, compositions, waterproofing, and bush hammer finishes. The result is a locally sourced compressed adobe brick that can be rotated into a variety of shapes with little to no maintenance. Bricks are widely used throughout the construction site, from fences to stair treads, where a water pipe is simply threaded through a hole in the brick to create an outdoor shower.
"Listening is very important, and this project is the result of following the existing conditions of the site and respecting the surrounding natural environment," says the architect. Complementing these conditions is a sparse material palette and striking compressed adobe protrusions that complete this home. Since its construction, the quarry house has also become a sanctuary for birds and other animals, who freely use the naturally treated pool as a water source. It's a secluded house, and we're still very careful to provide people with the comforts of city life."
