Toxic and harmful gases
Such as hydrogen sulfide, biogas, liquefied petroleum gas
It may cause accidents such as poisoning and explosion
Endanger the safety of the lives and property of nearby residents↓
Case 1
At about 12 o'clock on July 4, 2023, a hydrogen sulfide gas poisoning and suffocation accident occurred in the sewage treatment area of the northwest workshop (warehouse) of the Jiexi County Juxiangyuan Food Factory in Fengjiang Town, Jiexi County, Jieyang City, Guangdong Province. Due to the lack of rescue knowledge, 5 more rescuers were poisoned. The accident eventually led to the suffocation of 4 people from hydrogen sulfide gas poisoning, 2 people were injured, and the direct economic loss was about 808,000 yuan.
Case 2
On January 31, 2021, two self-employed Wang Hui and Chen Tao in Zhucheng, Shandong Province, and three workers hired by Jin Mouguang, Cui, and Ma, respectively secretly discharged two industrial waste liquids containing acetic acid and sodium hydrosulfide into the sewage pipe network in the courtyard of Fengchang Machinery Factory in Shunwang Street, Zhucheng City, and the two waste liquids were mixed to produce toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which spread to residents' homes through the pipe network, eventually resulting in 4 deaths, 3 serious injuries, and 32 poisoning.
What are toxic and harmful gases?
Common toxic and harmful gases can be divided into the following according to their toxic properties:
(1) Irritating gas - refers to the gas that has an irritating effect on the mucous membrane of the eyes and respiratory tract. It is a toxic gas commonly encountered in the chemical industry. There are many types of irritating gases, the most common are chlorine, ammonia, nitrogen oxides, phosgene, hydrogen fluoride, sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide and dimethyl sulfate.
(2) Asphyxiating gas - refers to the toxic gas that can cause hypoxia in the body. Asphyxiating gases can be divided into simple asphyxiating gases, blood asphyxiating gases, and cellular asphyxiating gases. Such as nitrogen, methane, ethane, ethylene, carbon monoxide, nitrobenzene vapor, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, etc.
After the leakage of toxic and harmful gases
What to do?
Emergency tips for toxic gas leaks
1. After an accident, personnel and the injured should be evacuated immediately to the upwind and isolated until the gas is exhausted.
2. Reasonable ventilation and cut off the air source. In the event of combustion or explosion, foam or sand should be used to extinguish the fire according to the nature of the toxic gas leakage. Toxic gases are diluted and dissolved with foam or spray water, and wastewater is collected and treated. Extraction (indoor) or strong ventilation (outdoor).
3. Smoking, eating, and drinking are strictly prohibited at the disposal site; shower and change clothes immediately after work; Someone must be supervised when entering areas with high concentrations of toxic gases.
4. Dispose of poisoned personnel. Evacuate the poisoned person quickly to a place with fresh air, and keep quiet and warm. Wash contaminated skin with clean water and remove contaminated clothing. Watch for early changes and take oxygen if necessary. Poisoned persons should avoid activities, and severe cases should be sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Emergency measures for toxic gas leaks
1. After an accident occurs, the personnel and injured in the accident area should pay attention to the wind direction and immediately evacuate to the upwind place.
2. Accident disposal personnel must wear protective tools when entering the accident scene, must use positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus, wear chemical safety protection eyes, wear chemical protective clothing, and wear acid and alkali resistant rubber gloves on their hands.
3. Poisoned persons must be sent to the hospital for follow-up treatment in time; Personnel who are exposed to toxic gases should be closely observed to prevent the onset of disease.
