With its mild climate and lush forest vegetation all year round, Valle de Bravo is a great place to get close to nature and relax by the lake. Architects Eduardo ·Hernandez · Chavez built a holiday home here to provide shelter for visitors.

The focus of the lighting design in this case is how to dissolve the existence of glass in perception, so that the space gives people a feeling of openness, and does not identify the boundaries between the atrium and the living room, the beams and the passage, but regards the interior space as a whole.

To create a dialogue between the atrium and the interior space, we analyzed the elements to create spatial depth and emphasize different layers. The first level is the stone wall, which has very low or almost zero light intensity, with only light from plants reflecting slightly off the stone wall. The second level is the plants, which are staked and recessed light fixtures on the floor to create light and shade and shadow cast on water mirrors.

For architect Eri·ka Andrade, home is a place where you can go, like a refuge, and this is her guide to designing lighting projects in which it is essential to consider warm tones, with an average color temperature of 2700K.

One of the characteristics of the building is transparency, and maintaining this feature in the interaction between inside and outside became a challenge in the lighting project, as attention had to be paid to the treatment of reflections and transparency.

Beams with lattices create a sense of neatness and are illuminated with indirect light to create a bathing effect that accentuates the verticality of the lattice. The beams are treated with indirect light to create a sheltered space, and the reflected light repeats the light and geometry again and again, creating a tranquil space that leads to the bedroom.

The beams in the living room are lit in the same way as the passage, so that the garden is visually felt to be part of the living room. Some luminaires with downlight are used for those special elements, such as sculptures and central tables, but do not diminish the dominance of the garden.

Indirect lighting is used in the passages to give the impression of a horizontal space, soft and welcoming, with down-lit luminaires in the corridors creating a carpet of light at the entrance, and a floor light source that gives the wooden elements a sense of verticality.

At the entrance, the texture of the material is layered, and the staircase is lit in an intimate way and unfolds in the water, further emphasizing this texture of light and shadow.

Erika Andrade explained that the lighting project took into account the cleanliness ·of the sky in Valle de Bravo without polluting the lights.

"We tried to fit into the concept and take into account that a 3 watt fixture might look like 5 watts or 6 watts because there is no light pollution and the added part will be perceived in the home. We have taken note of these details. ”

As an anecdote, Erica recounts how satisfied the end-user was with the finished project and invited her and the photographer to stay at the house by the lake for one night.

"It was a very special experience because I personally spent one night in a project designed by us. It's great to be able to bring our vision to life and experience it for yourself. ”

Finally, she commented that the role of lighting is to complement the building, "in a well-planned project, you can make the light appear to be coming from the building".
