Choose a toothbrush with care
6 months ~ 2 years old is the stage of baby teeth (milk teeth) eruption, and parents basically brush their children's teeth. Parents can use a finger cuff toothbrush (or wet gauze) to let their children gradually get used to the process of teeth cleaning, and accept the action of cleaning teeth and tongue. After the child is basically used to it, parents can choose a children's toothbrush with a wide handle and soft bristles, and it is best to use soft rubber around the brush head to prevent damage caused by punctures and scratches.
2~4 years old is the stage of baby teeth, children have a strong ability to imitate, during this period they begin to learn to brush their own teeth, parents should choose a toothbrush that can arouse children's interest in brushing teeth and is suitable for children to hold cartoon toothbrush handles, small head soft brush head toothbrush. It should be noted that children at this stage are still unable to brush their teeth effectively, and need the assistance and supervision of parents.
Children aged 5~7 years old begin to erupt their first permanent molars, and they should use a toothbrush with long bristles at the end, which is more conducive to cleaning teeth.
Children over 8 years old enter the mixed dentition period, and oral cleaning becomes more difficult, so parents can choose a toothbrush with crossed bristles and end-power bristles.
Master how to brush your teeth
✦
The Bass Brushing Method is an efficient way of brushing, also known as the Horizontal Shake Brushing Method, which thoroughly cleans the teeth, including the surface and between the teeth.
1. Place the brush head on the neck of the tooth, point the bristles to the root of the tooth, at an angle of about 45 degrees to the long axis of the tooth, and apply slight pressure so that the bristles part enters the gingival sulcus and part is placed on the gum.
2. Start brushing with 2~3 teeth in a group from the buccal side of the back teeth, go back and forth to the same part several times with a short-distance horizontal vibrating action, and then turn the toothbrush in the direction of the crown and brush the buccal surface. After brushing the first part, move the toothbrush to the position of the next group of 2~3 teeth and replace, pay attention to the overlapping area with the previous part, continue to brush the next part, and brush the lip (buccal) side and tongue (palatal) side of the upper and lower teeth in order.
3. The bristles point towards the occlusal surface and brush the occlusal surface of the teeth back and forth with moderate force.
4. Gently scrub the surface of the tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
5. Brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time to ensure a thorough clean.
Compared with the relatively complex Bass brushing method, the circular brushing method is easier for young children to understand and master. During this period, parents need to help their children brush their teeth, and parents should learn and master the arc brushing method, and insist on helping their children brush their teeth at least once a day.
1. Arc brush on the outside of the tooth The bristles gently touch the outside of the tooth, starting from the junction of the last tooth and the gums, and move forward while brushing in an arc-like brushing trajectory, brushing from the maxillary gums to the lower gums, and then from the mandibular gums to the maxillary gums. When brushing the outside of the front teeth, you can slightly extend the lower jaw forward so that the upper and lower dentition margins are facing each other, and still clean it with a circular arc action. Repeat contralaterally.
2. Vibrating brush inside the teeth Starting from the last tooth, the brush handle is parallel to the gum margin, and the toothbrush is held in a small way to move forward while vibrating back and forth. When brushing the inside of your front teeth, hold your toothbrush upright and use the top bristles to shake up and down. Repeat contralaterally.
3. Brush the occlusal surface back and forth Cleaning the occlusal surface of the teeth requires greater friction. Aim the brush head at the pit and fissure and brush back and forth to remove food debris that remains in the pit and fissure.
Use children's dental floss
Children's gums are very delicate, and proper flossing is important to remove food debris from between teeth and prevent tooth decay.
Parents can opt for dental floss specifically designed for children, which may have a fruity flavor and are thinner and shorter than adult dental floss, making them more suitable for children to handle and more acceptable to children. Children should floss under the supervision and guidance of an adult to ensure that the gums are not harmed. Parents should instruct their child to gently hold the ends of the floss stick or wrap floss, gently slide the floss into between the teeth, and gently move the floss up and down the sides of the teeth with the floss to clean the area between the teeth and gums.
