International Day for Disaster Reduction
October 13, 2024 is the 35th International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, with the theme of "Empowering the Young Generation, Building a Resilient Future", emphasizing that through education, children and adolescents should be empowered to respond to disasters, share knowledge and skills in disaster prevention, mitigation and relief, and enable them to become promoters of family and community resilience, and continuously improve the comprehensive disaster reduction capacity of the whole society.
Establishment of the International Day for Disaster Reduction
In 1989, the United Nations General Assembly initiated the establishment of the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction to promote a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction. Since 2009, United Nations conferences have adopted resolutions to designate 13 October as the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction, or "International Day for Disaster Reduction", to recognize the efforts of people and communities around the world to reduce their exposure to disasters and to raise awareness of the importance of the risks they face.
