KM Yachtbuilders is proud to announce the final delivery and launch of the ocean-going 77 expedition vessel "Amundsen". The ship's primary goal is to reach the Falkland Islands by 2025. This sailboat is a highlight of the fleet at the Makkum shipyard in the Netherlands. Following the impressive design of its sister ship, the Vinson of Antarctica, the Amundsen is the second in the series. The name of the sailing ship is in honor of the famous polar explorer Roald Amundsen·
appearance
The "Amundsen" was built with a solid aluminum hull and aluminum superstructure, and the ship engineering was designed by Tony Castro. The boat is 6.2 meters wide and has a special red stripe near the waterline. The two carbon fibre masts have been carefully designed to evenly distribute her sail surface, complemented by a manual sail handling system consisting of a manual winch and spinnaker windler.
Interior
Inside, the Amundsen has a professional wheelhouse, a spacious salon and a fully equipped kitchen. This sailboat can accommodate up to eight guests and is perfect for long sea voyages. Unlike her sister ship, the Antarctic Vincennes, the Amundsen is an enhanced iteration that has undergone several modifications. Notably, her propulsion system sets her apart, with modern, eco-friendly engines designed to minimize environmental impact.
Other enhancements include:
● There is more standing space in the cab
● The movable stabilizer plate has been removed from the fixed keel
● The propeller is closer to the rudder blade to increase berthing maneuverability.
● Larger cabin
● Bow thruster
These modifications, as well as many other small details, contribute to the excellent performance and environmental sustainability of the Amundsen.
Team effort
This project is the result of a fantastic team effort, united by their passion for adventure and serious dedication to innovation and sustainability.
Eeuwe Kooi, founder of KM Yachtbuilders, said: "It's been fantastic to work with this team again. The Antarctic Vincennes and its sister ship Amundsen are two proud polar expedition sailing vessels! ”
Skip Novak, a well-known ocean-going sailor and commercial director of an ocean-going expedition company, and Nicolás Ibáñez Scott, a Chile entrepreneur and adventurer, recently participated in the launching ceremony. Skip Novak explains the idea behind the second ocean-going 77 Amundsen: "The decision to build a sister ship for the 'Antarctic Vincennes' was based on the success of this design concept. It has generated valuable projects that have contributed to schooling in Chile and Spain. This includes north-south crossings of the Atlantic Ocean and the Southern Hemisphere, with the Antarctic Vincennes now based in South America. ”
Nicolás Ibáñez Scott added to the vision and values of the Antarctic Vincennes and Amundsen: "At a time when much of the world has been mapped and explored, the voyage of the Amundsen reminds us that the true nature of adventure lies not only in discovering new places, but also in daring to dream, to dare to take risks, and to embark on journeys that challenge our boundaries and broaden our horizons. ”

Peter ·Wilson of MCM Newport successfully supervised the construction of the "Antarctic Vincennes" and "Amundsen". When Wilson discusses the choice of aluminium for the hull and superstructure, he comments: "Aluminium has great strength, ease of repair and better weight performance than steel. With Tony Castro's design and Skip Novak's racing background, good sailing performance is paramount, and a well-designed sailboat is always more fun. ”
Amundsen is now on her way to the Falkland Islands and RYA's recognised training centre, and the vessel will arrive in the Falkland Islands by the end of 2024. In 2025, the ocean-going expedition sailing vessel will offer a practical sea-based course and mileage building program on board.
