In the 20th year of Keicho (1615), Tokugawa Ieyasu completely destroyed the Toyotomi family through the Osaka Natsu no No. Toyotomi Hideyoshi's descendants were all killed by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the Toyotomi family was completely exterminated, leaving not even a single branch left. So what about Tokugawa Ieyasu being able to eliminate the old lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi?
Killing all the descendants of a thoroughly defeated enemy is considered the "takemon rule" of ancient Japan, and so was Tokugawa Ieyasu. In particular, the Toyotomi family was the lord of the world who even Tokugawa Ieyasu swore allegiance, and Tokugawa Ieyasu felt that the complete elimination of his concubine family would be regarded as a permanent disaster.
However, the killing of the eternal offender is generally only aimed at the concubines, and rarely affects the collateral branches. Although many of Japan's Sengoku daimyō clans were exterminated after their demise, the side branches were often preserved. The total destruction of the Toyotomi family is rare, and this account will be counted on Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a lowly samurai by birth, and his paternal relatives consisted of only one younger brother, Toyotomi Hidenaga. Toyotomi Hideyoshi had only one son, Toyotomi Hideho, who died prematurely and had no children. Toyotomi Hideyoshi's sister did not have children, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi himself did not have children for a long time.
However, Toyotomi Hideyoshi's sister Mizuryuin had three sons (Hideji, Hidekatsu, and Hideho), and Toyotomi Hideyoshi adopted three nephews as adopted sons and became full members of the Toyotomi family. However, Toyotomi Hidekatsu and Toyotomi Hideho both died young and early, and neither of them had a son in their lifetime.
Toyotomi Hideji had a large number of wives and concubines, and gave birth to four sons and several daughters, becoming the largest branch of the Toyotomi family. However, in the fourth year of Bunroku (1595), the Toyotomi Hideji family was all executed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, not even a few years old, and the largest branch of the Toyotomi family was completely destroyed.
After the extinction of Toyotomi Hideji's family, the only male members of the Toyotomi family were Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his son Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu could destroy the entire Toyotomi clan by killing Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In terms of the number of members of the Toyotomi family killed, Tokugawa Ieyasu was really not as good as Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
