The film begins with a conversation by a writer about a man who has been drifting at sea for 227 days, a man named Pie.
Pie began to tell his own story. The family lives in India, and their father and mother run a zoo. Pie believes in seeing gods as superheroes, and he believes in multiple religions at the same time.
The father was the only non-vegetarian in the family, he chose to be rational, and the father told Pai, "You can't believe in three different religions at the same time... Society is complex and we have to start from reason."
Once he was sent to feed the tiger, and the brother left in fear, and just as the tiger was approaching the pie, the father arrived, stopped all this, and taught the pie a lesson: he put a lamb in the place where the tiger was closed, and the tiger slowly came out, bit the lamb to death, and dragged it back to eat.
Mother believes that science solves external problems, not internal problems, and Pai finally says that he wants to be baptized, and it is clear that he still chose faith, so he will have the first story.
The father said that the zoo could not be opened, the land was also the government, and they would travel to Canada and sell the animals to North America.
Pai falls in love with a woman named Ananti, who is reluctant to leave her, and there are shots of saying goodbye to her before leaving.
But the shot depicting Ananti is not superfluous, but forms a reflection relationship with what happens later, which has also aroused a lot of heated discussion.
Pie says that he likes Ananti's water lily-like movements, and when Pie asks where the water lilies are, Ananti says that in the forest, in the second half of the film, Pie drifts into a small island, and finds a water lily in the island.
In the parting shot with Ananti, Pai also says that he remembers everything that happened that day, except forgetting the scene where he was separated from her, which is also linked to his final choice to forget his animalistic side.
Explain the background of the story.
Pi started by telling the first story. On their way to Canada on a Japanese ship, they encountered a major storm and the ship crashed, leaving only themselves and four animals alive.
The zebra was injured and dying, the hyena killed the orangutan, the tiger ate the hyena, and finally all the animals were eaten by the tiger.
Pie and Tiger survived together, passing by a small island with freshwater lakes and dense foxes, tigers eat foxes, and Pie eats plant rhizomes.
The second story seems even more true, the shipwreck, four people survived, the cook saved Pi, the sailor broke his leg while jumping off the boat, and the mother climbed a bunch of bananas on board.
The cook said that the sailor's leg must be amputated, otherwise he would not live long, so Pai and his mother held the sailor down, and the sailor was amputated and died.
Later, the mother was also killed by the cook, who threw the mother off the boat and sent the cook to kill the last to avenge the mother.
One of these two stories seems to be dreamy, the other seems to be realistic, in fact, both stories have flaws, making people have to doubt his authenticity, and perhaps part of the reality has been concealed.
First of all, Pie said that the orangutan sat on a banana and floated to himself, and then said that his mother got on the boat with a bunch of bananas, and the people inside also raised everyone's doubts: "Bananas don't float."
There is a second story that the cook is not wasteful, not even the mouse, but when it comes to killing his mother, he says that he threw her into the sea?
Let's start with a closer look:
This makes people involuntarily reason about the truth. At present, the most reasonable thing that Xiaobian thinks is that the tiger represents the animal nature of the pie, because in the end only they survived, and the second story only the pie survived.
Zebras represent sailors, hyenas represent cooks, and orangutans represent mothers.
The cook (hyena) designed to kill the subsequent sailor (zebra), and then the cook (hyena) killed the mother (orangutan). "Maybe these animals assign a family of four."
After mom's death, Pie's bestiality slowly began to appear. This corresponds to the first story, why the tiger came out last.
In order to avenge his mother, Pai killed the cook. "Maybe Mom is dead because bananas don't surface, it's just an excuse to kill the cook."
But in the end, the sanity of survival triumphed over his own convictions, and Pie, as a vegetarian, had to eat the remains of sailors and cooks.
And the mother is probably also eaten by the pie, and the pie just does not dare to recall, so the cook threw the mother into the sea. "Maybe Mom was thrown into the water by Pie, and Pie couldn't bear to eat Mom."
After a fierce psychological struggle, Pai eventually ate his mother's body and the maggots on her body, knowing that he would not survive without doing so.
But how could eating someone else be the same as eating his own mother, and he chose to forget so that his own humanity and animality could coexist, or he himself would fall into great pain and eventually die.
And in the first story, pie has an island, and this island, as mentioned earlier, pi likes Ananti's water lily-like movements.
And this island is likely to represent Ananti, and Ananti may be the island of hope that appeared when the pie was about to despair.
Pie may not have left Ananti, Pi secretly hid Ananti in the boat, when the ship was shipwrecked, Ananti had already drifted to the island and survived on instinct for a while, but when Pie drifted to this island, Ananti was already dead and could only eat Ananti's body to survive. "Maybe the rat is referring to Ananti, anandti and Pie in a small boat, and finally the tiger eats the mouse"
This is also a response to the dialogue with Ananti at the beginning, and everything is remembered very clearly, except for the part of saying goodbye to Ananti.
