A fantasy drift of teenagers and cats
"Young Pi" is positioned as a plot, fantasy and adventure. But in my opinion, it is a high-quality "suspense" masterpiece.
Director Ang Lee tells 3 different stories in a limited space (most people can only see 2), but does not tell us which one is the real story.
He only gave us one clue—it's a story that makes people believe in God.
A story that can make people believe that there is a God?
I'll revisit these three very different stories. Which is the true story and which is the story that makes people believe in the existence of God, and it is up to you to judge.
1. The story of the teenage pi and the animals
2. The story of the young pi who kills the cook
3. The story of the teenager sending his mother to survive
PS: The article is a bit long, stick to the end, you will see something different

the first story

The protagonist comes from a middle-class Indian family, and under the influence of his mother, he has been interested in religious belief since childhood, but he seems to see one love one and one for religion, without any resistance, Hinduism, Christianity and even Islam are on his favorite list.
Pie and Mother
Polytheists, pie
His father, on the other hand, was an atheist, and his father admonished that if you believe in everything, you believe in nothing.
Teen Pi and Father
Pai's father owns a zoo in India.
Home to the zoo
However, due to the increasing difficulty of running a business in India, the family is about to relocate to Canada to continue to start a new chapter in life, along with all the animals in the zoo.
This was an unacceptable and helpless decision for Pai, who, at the age of 16, boarded a ship to Canada with his family and animals.
Set sail for Canada
The cook on the ship saw that Pai's family had a bad attitude and refused to provide vegetarian food to the mother and son who did not eat meat.
Cook
But not everyone on board was hostile to them, and one Sailor of Asian descent showed them friendship.
mariner
A few days after going out to sea, one night of lightning and thunder, the ship where the Pai family was located encountered a storm, and Pai sneaked out of the cabin out of the cabin out of curiosity about the appearance of the storm, believing that the storm was some kind of god's story to man, and clumsily danced a meaningful dance to echo it.
Awkward dance in the storm
However, the intensifying storm not only did not give any response to the dispatch, but also intensified the offensive. Ships are struggling in the rolling waves, and they can be overturned at any time.
The ship sank
Pai wanted to return to the cabin to wake up his family, but the cabin was already soaked in the sea, and he was pushed by the crew onto one of the few lifeboats.
lifeboat
In addition to pie on the lifeboat, there is also a zebra that broke its leg when jumping off the boat, a hunting dog with teeth and claws waiting for the opportunity,
hunting dog
A female orangutan who has lost her child,
Female orangutan
and a fierce Bengal tiger.
Bengal tigers
Drifting on an isolated lifeboat in the middle of the endless ocean, hunger is sooner or later.
The first to suffer is the zebra with broken legs, and in front of the hungry hounds, the zebra can only be the fish on the plate.
Hounds eat zebras
The female orangutan desperately tries to stop the hounds, but is unable to do so.
The female orangutan stops the hounds
Zebra meat can only temporarily maintain a shaky peace, and when the meat is eaten, the hound immediately aims its sharp teeth at the neck of the female orangutan, and the female orangutan fights back in the face of the hound's evil intentions, but in the end it can not withstand the other party.
The praying mantis cicada catcher Yellow Sparrow is behind, and at this moment, the Bengal tiger that has been hiding under the canvas has been hiding under the canvas, and the Bengal tiger that has not moved has come out and killed the hound.
Tiger out of the mountains
Now, there are only two survivors left on the lifeboat, the Bengal Tiger and the Pai.
In fact, Pai has known this Bengal tiger since he was a child, and he has a human name called Richard Parker.
Using parts from the lifeboat, Pai sneaked together a raft. Tie it to the lifeboat with a rope so he can keep a safe distance from Richard Parker through the raft.
Such a relationship is delicate and dangerous, and it is only through certain domestication techniques that the pie can find a balance between survival and dignity through a certain domestication technique and Richard Parker's constant twists and turns.
Pie sat on his raft
A storm strikes and Pie is washed up on a mysterious island.
Mysterious island
The island looks like a lying human body from a distance, and the tree roots that can be seen everywhere on the island have become an inexhaustible source of food. And the island's hordes of foxes can finally feed the skinny Richard Parker.
There are many foxes on the island
The island is almost a continuation of the lives of Pie and Richard Parker. It gives them hope to continue to survive.
islet
Pie decided to use the island's resources to stock up on enough food, and then took Richard Parker with him and set out on his way to find the mainland.
There is food on the island
Finally, after more than 200 days of unimaginable life and death drifting for ordinary people, the small lifeboat finally crossed the ocean to the American continent, and Pai and Richard Parker miraculously survived.
Pie in the wind and rain
What puzzled and saddleed Pai the most was Richard Parker's reaction when he arrived ashore. He didn't even look at himself any more and disappeared into the jungle. Since then, it has not appeared in the trajectory of Pi's life.
Richard Parker left the pie
Richard Parker's departure
This is the first story that the middle-aged faction tells the novelist in the movie
It is a story of infinite sorrow, but also full of adventure and hope. It is the story of a teenager who uses his tenacious desire to survive in all kinds of dangers to achieve self-salvation, and it is the story of the integration of man and nature, man and faith, and man and self.
But is this a story that makes people believe in God? What do you think?

the second story

So, Pi told the novelist a second story. This story was first told to Japanese insurance investigators who questioned the veracity of the first story.
Ang Lee only used an understated pen and ink to narrate it through the mouth of the juvenile faction, without even a single picture of a star and a half. But between these three words, there is a huge amount of information stored.
Novelist and middle-aged
In this story, on the night of the storm, four people are still on the same lifeboat.
Stormy night
The first to be on the lifeboat are the cooks and sailors, the hostile cooks and well-meaning sailors who have appeared in the first story. Later, Pai and his mother also got on the boat.
Escape to a lifeboat
Pie witnesses the cook killing and eating a rat,
Eat mice
At that time, they still had plenty of food, but the cook still insisted on doing so, and felt good about himself, and the beast nature of his body was revealed.
The sailor accidentally broke his leg while jumping on a lifeboat. Pai and his mother tried to help him with the bones, but still couldn't stop the infection from worsening the wound. The cook proposes that if he wants to keep the sailor alive, he has to choose to amputate his leg. Pai and his mother helped the cook to amputate the sailor's leg, hoping that the sailor would survive. But everyone can imagine that in the wandering sea, without any anesthesia measures, without any professional instruments, nor any anti-inflammatory and sterilizing drugs, it is impossible to complete a successful amputation. As a result, naturally, the sailors lost their lives in advance.
Subsequently, the cook is relieved to catch the fish, but Pai's mother is not happy about it, she knows that the cook is fishing with the meat of a dead sailor. The cook asked for the sailor's life under the pretext of amputation, so that he could use the sailor's corpse to hoard food. To this end, Pai's mother and the cook also had a fierce physical conflict.
Later, the cook's animalistic side became more and more difficult to hide, and he ate the remnants of the sailor's flesh like a rat.
One day, Pai was beaten by the cook for accidentally releasing a turtle. Pie's mother desperately protects her son and lets Pie escape to the raft, but she is unfortunately stabbed to death by the cook with a knife and thrown into the sea to become a shark delicacy.
Sharks eat people
This infuriated Pi completely, and he waited for the opportunity to kill the cook with the same knife and avenge his mother.
But this knife also inspired the animalistic side of Pai's heart. He did the same thing a cook did to a sailor, and during the long drift that followed, Pie fed himself with the cook's meat.
The second story
In this story, we can see many echoes and contrasts with the first story. Zebras and sailors both broke their legs, hounds killed zebras and orangutans, cooks killed sailors and Pai's mother, bengal tigers suddenly appeared and killed hounds when the mother was stabbed to death by the cook, and when the mother was stabbed to death by the cook, he sent a murderous heart to take the cook's life.
It is not difficult to find that the second story is what really happens in reality, and the first story is a fictional fantasy. Here, the zebra is the sailor, the hound is the cook, the female orangutan is his mother, and the Bengal tiger is the other side of the pie, the animalistic side.
Refers to relationships
The tiger turned out to be myself
In both stories, the ship sank, and the family of Pai was all killed, and Pai finally arrived at the other shore with a devastated heart.
Two stories
But these two stories still make people believe in the existence of God.

the third story

So the movie actually hides a third story. This story is only hidden in the various metaphors of the movie, and it has not surfaced to show its true face from beginning to end, because this story, the scale is too large, will face people's bottom line and directly impact people's three views. This story is the true portrayal of the more than two hundred days and nights of the teenage drift.
Juvenile Pie
Zebras are still sailors, hounds are still cooks, female orangutans are still Pie's mothers, and tigers are still Pie's own. But in this story, we have to discuss where the mother is going.
In the second story, Pi's mother is thrown into the sea to feed the sharks. However, this is obviously not in line with the characteristics of the cook who does not waste any waste, he will make the best use of the body of the sailor, there is no reason to waste the body of the mother. In addition, I don't believe that a story of revenge is the whole story, which simply can't set off such a big ripple in the heart of the aftermath.
The cook never wastes
Mother, in Pai's heart, has a pivotal place.
Pie's mother
She was the guide of the life of a teenager growing up. The mother believes in religion, the pie also believes in religion, the mother is vegetarian, the pie is also a vegetarian, and the reverie of the pie at sea finally dissolves into the mother's head instead of someone else.
Pie's fantasy – Mother
I think the core of the story must still be related to the mother.
So, if the truth of the matter is not as simple as the second story, what really happened on the lifeboat?
The clue is actually hidden on pi and Richard Parker's desperate cannibal island. Hidden here is a story of animal cruelty that Pai will find difficult to accept for a lifetime.
A story that is difficult to accept
The cannibal island in the movie is full of unreality, and I think many people should be able to detect it.
Like a dream
In fact, this is a deliberate arrangement by Ang Lee, deliberately exposing flaws to us.
The island looks like a woman's body,
The shape of the island resembles a woman's body
The roots of trees are very similar to the meridians and blood vessels of the human body,
Vines resemble blood vessels
Foxes that only appear in the desert appear at sea, and from a distance they look like countless maggots.
Foxes
Looks like maggots
At night, the island is submerged in fluorescent acidic liquids.
Acid - stomach acid
In the glowing lotus flower, human teeth can also be found,
Human teeth symbolize cannibalism
It's like the remnants of digestion by gastric juice.
Nothing seems to make sense on the island.
Because, here is also the fantasy after the party's cruel real memory is fictionalized and beautified.
The fantasies of the teenage pi
The Young Pi was able to survive for more than two hundred days on a sea that called the heavens and the earth unspiritual, and food and water came first. In fantasy, Pie was able to reach the mainland by stockpiling enough food on Man-Eating Island.
Since the cannibal island is a fiction and does not exist, what does it remind you of eating food on a humanoid island?
Cannibalism?
We know that Richard Parker is also not real, he is a projection of the beastly nature of the pie in extreme circumstances. This beastliness not only helped him to break the threat of the cook, but also helped him escape from the shipwreck.
There were many chances at sea to allow Richard Parker to die, but he did not do so, for he knew very well that it was bestiality that had allowed him to live until now, even if it was considered shameful and unforgivable by himself.
What happened on the lifeboat in the end, Ang Lee used a vague, ambiguous shooting method.
200 days at sea
Regardless of the details of the truth, I believe Pai used the bodies of the other people on the lifeboat to get through it. The appearance of the woman on The Cannibal Island also hints at what he did to his mother. The outbreak of animality under the unforgiving nature of Pi was the only straw in his despair. It's just that the film uses exquisite pictures to put a fantasy coat on the core of the story, which reminds me of human history and civilization. Facts are always cruel, but people's praises and praises are always so beautiful.
Terrible truth
What Ang Lee has done more conscientiously is that he deliberately left out the flaws, so that we will not fall endlessly when we are immersed in the wonderful illusion, but can follow these flaws to find out the truth according to Tu Suoji.

the mental journey of the teenage pie

The mental journey of the young pi
The third story is over, and if you agree with the third story I'm talking about, then please take another look at the complex inner circle of the character. Take a closer look at what Pie has been through.
———— Phase 1 ————
Juvenile and Christian
Teen Pi was a pantheist who had multiple beliefs.
He was constantly expecting miracles to appear, in whatever form. So he would dance toward the storm and would call out to Richard Parker to look at the sunlight behind the clouds.
And this just shows that he didn't believe in the existence of God so much.
If a person is always looking for the so-called "proof", it can only be said that there is still a denial of this matter in his heart. Trust that does not need to be proven is called "piety."
So Pie's father was right, believing anything is tantamount to not believing anything.
Pie got on the boat with such an ignorant state, but this was normal, Pie was still very young, and his faith was still too young to touch the shape. In fact, there are many people who may not have the means to find their faith in their lifetime.
———— Phase 2————
Later, the ship on which the family was riding encountered a storm, and the father and brother were killed first. They were two people who didn't believe in God.
Those who escaped to the lifeboat were Pai, Pai's mother, and sailors with Buddhist beliefs. Do you feel as if there is an invisible hand arranging people's lives and deaths? Do you think that the pie who escaped from the lifeboat with his mother would think who saved him?
But on the lifeboat, there was a fourth man, the cook, whose faith was unknown, but judging purely by his actions, he was more of a symbol that tested the willpower of the believers.
Then the life and death officer and everyone made a joke and sentenced the two believers to death. At this point, what do you think is going on in the mind of the pantheistic teenagers? Do you think he will still believe in god's existence and accept the harsh reality at this time?
Obviously not.
He broke free from the shackles of faith and unleashed the beast in his heart. He killed the cook and began to eat meat, leaving behind the precepts.
Kill the cook
Animal
In the first story, we see the tiger in the heart of the pie occupying a dominant position for a long time. Because only in this way can Pie survive in the cruel nature. But the price is a wreck of human nature and an alienation from faith.
The largest part of the film is the confrontation between Pi and Richard Parker. In fact, Pie had already encountered Richard Parker in childhood, which was a metaphor for the infancy of The Pie in favor of human primitive nature. But was stopped by his father.
Father had reminded himself
And on the lifeboat, no one else could stop the party from testing human nature. At this moment, he even got carried away for a while, forcing the remnants of humanity to the corner of the ship. The scene of Cannibal Island, a metaphor for using his mother's body to survive, is also the most dangerous moment before Pie truly becomes a beast.
———— Phase 3————
Beautiful
In the middle of the vast sea, it can be said that pie has almost nothing, but has a scarce resource that everyone else craves for more and more good-time. He used this precious resource to think extravagantly about the meaning of life. The film uses the most beautiful picture, the night when the sea transforms into stars, to illustrate. That night Pie also dreamed of his mother who was thinking about twilight.
Pie's fantasy is his thinking
When the female physical appearance of the man-eating island appears, it actually means that Pai's humanity is slowly waking up and finding its original self, just as in the first story, Pai is slowly competing with Richard Parker.
I don't know exactly what it was for Teen Pi to get back to his way, but he seems to have found some kind of balance between humanity and bestiality in the drift that follows, and that balance continues until the moment he finally finds the other shore.
The most amazing thing is the scene where Richard Parker leaves, Pie said that he thought Richard Parker would have some nostalgia for himself, yes, releasing nature, releasing self is what everyone is willing to do, the least effort, the easiest thing. But the young pi actually maintained this restraint and adhered to the bottom line of human nature under the supervision of no one and driven by any external force.
Richard Parker eventually left
It turns out that after all this, the pie is no longer the pie that needs to be "proven" to trust something and dance in the storm.
The strength he acquires, I believe, is the power of true faith, but this faith is not drawn from the worship of God, but through inner perseverance.
Only such a belief can make people truly find inner peace, and only with this peace can adults accept and appreciate the beast that once existed in their hearts. Thanks to Richard Parker for testing himself and allowing himself to find true faith.
Years later, the adult faction can already laugh about the past, he is still involved in many religious fields, he is still a pantheist in people's eyes, but his inner direction is clear.
The heart is oriented
In fact, I don't have the answer to whether these three stories will make people believe in the existence of God, but if faith must have some kind of connection with God, I think it may be so.
God is not believed because he exists, but because he believes, he exists.
Which story do you believe?
