Turkbat was part of the Mongol tribes and was originally a branch of the Mongol Weyrat. After the demise of the Vara, the Mongol parts were divided into four parts, and the Turks were one of them. Because the Ming government had long been in a state of hostility with the Mongols, the Turks had to move west. In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, the Turks moved to the area of present-day Tacheng.
In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, the influential Dzungar forces appeared in today's Xinjiang region, and its leader Kaldan unified the Mongol tribes and invaded the territory of the Turks from time to time. In this case, the other tribes had to submit to his command. However, although Kaldan unified the Mongol tribes for a time, there were still signs of division within it. Soon after the Kangxi Emperor's western conquest of the Dzungars, the Turks were forced to move west again, and in order to escape the bullying of the Dzungars, the westward-migrating Turk tribes moved to live in the lower Volga River.
The lower Volga River is rich in water and grass, suitable for cattle, horses and livestock, but this is a foreign land after all, so when the Turks reached the lower Volga, it was invaded by Tsarist Russia. Emperor Catherine II of Tsarist Russia was an ambitious empress who was not satisfied with the status quo in Tsarist Russia, so Tsarist Russia began to expand eastward under her rule.
Tsarist Russia's territorial desires were endless, especially in a territory as rich as the Volga. In this case, the Turgut tribe had to consider returning to the east. During the Kangxi Dynasty, the fourth Khan of Turkhut, Ashyuqi, sent his nephew Alabjul to the interior to test the attitude of the Qing Dynasty, and at that time, the Kangxi Emperor also attached great importance to the return of Turk to the east, but because Alabjur and his party were intercepted by the Dzungars, the will of the Turks to return to the east for the first time was broken.
Although the first return to the east failed, the Turks understood the attitude of the Qing government towards themselves, so this tentative move still brought hope to the Turks. During the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, the Turk Khan Wobasi began to plan his return to the interior. At that time, Tsarist Russia was at war with the Ottoman Empire, and in order to deal with the Ottoman army, Empress Catherine II of Russia mobilized the Turks as cannon fodder, and in this case, Wolbassi accelerated the process of returning to the east.
In 1771 AD, the Turk Khan Wolbasi led 170,000 people to return to the east, these 170,000 people are the descendants of the Turgut tribe on the east bank of the Volga River, they walked east with the Khan Wolbasi, and experienced ups and downs along the way. The Turbat people who remained in the West Bank were unable to follow Wolbasi because of the obstruction of the river, so they remained in Russia for a long time.
Although the Returning Turks were stopped by the Tsarist Russian Cossack cavalry, Wolbasi did not give up the pace of returning to the motherland. Later, The Eastern Returnees such as Wobasi finally returned to their hometown, and they were warmly welcomed by the Qianlong Emperor, who himself was also named Zhuoliktu Khan by the Qianlong Emperor.
The Turks, who did not follow their leader back to the east, also suffered hardships, and after the return of Wolbasi, the Turks who remained in the Volga Valley later participated in the Pugajo Uprising against the Tsar. Later, the Soviet Union was established, and Russia established the Republic of Kalmyk on the ground, and to this day, the republic also has descendants of the Turguts.
