In 1949, after the defeat of Chiang Kai-shek's meticulously planned Battle of Shanghai, the Kuomintang military and political personnel who fled Taiwan were full of discussions. At that time, Tombaugh's troops were well-equipped, but after only ten days of resistance, the whole city collapsed. In order to find out the reasons for the defeat, Chiang Kai-shek instructed Chen Cheng to preside over a review meeting in Taipei on the failure of the Shanghai Defensive War.
>> "Holding a review meeting is to approve the soup"
On July 2, 1949, the Review Meeting was held at a hotel in Taipei. Attending the meeting were military and political officers and officers at or above the division level who had participated in the Shanghai defense war, and Tang Enbo was invited to give a report on the situation.
When it was the turn of others to speak, some of the senior generals pointed the finger at Tombaugh. Luo Zemin, the former commander of the 37th Army, whose troops were stationed in Pudong and under the worst conditions, looked at his troops differently. Worse still, when Tombaugh ordered the troops to retreat, he did not inform his 37th Army. As a result, the 37th Army was completely annihilated, and he, deputy commander Wang Dajun and a few others disguised themselves as civilians before they escaped. Wang Dajun, former deputy commander of the 37th Army, also made many criticisms of Tang Enbo in his subsequent speech.
After the meeting, When Tombaugh walked out of the conference room, he kept his head down and did not speak. After returning home, Tang Enbo complained: "The Kuomintang has fought so many defeated battles on the mainland, and there are many more dead and wounded than in the Shanghai defense war." Why didn't a single review meeting be held, but a review meeting for the Shanghai Defense War? ”
Tang Enbo knew very well in his heart that his situation in Taiwan in the future would certainly not be good. Later, Luo Zemin saw that Tang Enbo had not been punished, so he went to the military court to file a complaint. Chiang Kai-shek felt that it was inappropriate, instructed Chen Cheng to persuade Luo Zemin to withdraw the complaint paper, and privately told Luo Zemin that the review meeting was actually to criticize Tang Enbo and there was no need to dwell on it.
>> wantEd Tang Enbo to execute Chen Yi
Early 1949. Chen Yi, chairman of the Zhejiang provincial government, was influenced by the Communist Party to go to Shanghai to instigate the tang enbo uprising, which was then the commander-in-chief of the Beijing-Shanghai-Hangzhou garrison.
Tang Enbo's early years of studying at the Japanese Non-Commissioned Officer School was won by Chen Yi, and the cost was also funded by Chen Yi. In gratitude to Chen Yi, Tang changed his name to "Enbo" and worshiped Chen Yi as "Righteous Father" and "Benefactor".
After Chen Yi told Tang Enbo of her thoughts, it aroused Tang Enbo's disgust. In order to show his righteousness and destroy his relatives, Tang Enbo actually betrayed his mentor. On February 21, Chiang Kai-shek ordered Chen Yi's arrest.
According to Tang Enbo later, when he received the order, he made a condition to Chiang Kai-shek that Chen Yi could not be executed, and Chiang Kai-shek agreed. But in June 1950, Chiang Kai-shek broke his promise and decided to execute a group of high-ranking "rebels" who served the Communist Party, including Chen Yi and others who had been escorted to Taiwan.
In order to save Chen Yi, Tang Enbo went to Zhang Qun, the leader of the "Department of Political Science" several times, and asked to meet Chiang Kai-shek. After hearing this, Chiang Kai-shek was furious: "Chen Yi has committed such a great crime, is he not clear in Tang Enbo's heart?" No one can intercede for this! Tang Enbo was depraved, he wanted to speak for Chen Yi, I didn't see him! ”
Chiang Kai-shek not only did not see Tang Enbo, but also asked him to personally execute Chen Yi to test whether he was really "righteous and exterminated his relatives." But Tombaugh was adamant.
Chiang Kai-shek had no choice but to order Chen Yi's brother-in-law, Yuan Shouqian, vice minister of state affairs of the "Ministry of National Defense," to carry out Chen Yi's death sentence. In the early morning of June 18, 1950, Chen Yi was shot. After that, Chiang Kai-shek disliked Tang Enbo even more.
>> ordered the military police to force Tang to get off the plane
The Chen Yi incident and political use are not highly valued. He was very stimulated by Tombaugh, he felt faceless to see relatives and friends, and he wanted to spend the rest of his life in Japan.
As early as the Shanghai Defense War, Tang Enbo was preparing to flee to Japan. According to Gu Zhenggang and others, at that time, Tang Enbo knew that he could not defend Shanghai, so he secretly sent his cronies Wang Wencheng and Long Zuoliang to Japan to find refuge for them.
On May 6, 1949, Tang Enbo ordered his cronies to secretly remit $500,000 in military expenses to the account of a friend in the United States, who in turn transferred the money to Wang Wencheng and Long Saori in Japan.
When Wang Wencheng first arrived in Japan, he did not contact the Chiang Kai-shek clique's office in Japan. Later, Tang Enbo considered that Wang Wencheng and Long Zuoliang had nowhere to receive salaries, so he suggested that the two be recruited into the military delegation in Japan to work as non-staff advisers.
Wang Wencheng and Long Zuoliang were thinking of finding a way out for Tang Enbo. In July 1949, the two spent $30,000 on a 22-room mansion for Tombaugh in the suburbs of Tokyo, Japan.
After Buying a house in Japan, Tang Enbo accidentally leaked the news. February 2, 1950. Reuters sent a news from Tokyo: "Chiang Kai-shek buys a mansion on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan through a top Chinese official."
When Chiang Kai-shek learned of this, he scolded: "Asshole! No wonder Shanghai and the southeast coast lost so quickly. It turned out that he (Tombaugh) had already made preparations to flee to Japan! ”
In March 1950, Tombaugh decided to go to Japan on the grounds of recruiting Japanese volunteers to counterattack the mainland. After Tombaugh got on the plane. The ticket inspector on board asked him to show his document to Japan. Tombaugh claimed to have been assigned by the government to Japan on a special mission and did not apply for a visa. The crew asked him to get off the plane, but he was determined not to do so, and had a heated argument with the staff.
Chiang Kai-shek judged that Tang Enbo wanted to flee to Japan, so he ordered it to be stopped. After receiving the order, several military police officers forcibly pulled Tombaugh off the plane.
>> died on the Operating Table in Japan
Tang Enbo was not reused in Taiwan, and his escape was unsuccessful. The burden of thought is very heavy. On September 12, 1953, his 55th birthday, he had planned to have a few tables, but it was cancelled.
Due to long-term anger, Tombaugh's body wasting. Doctors said he had a problem with his liver.
Later, Tang Enbo applied to go to Japan for medical treatment. Chiang Kai-shek sarcastically said: "There are people who have made great mistakes, and they still have to go to Japan to treat their illness!" Subsequently, the application report of Tombaugh was signed with the words "treatment in situ".
On October 2, 1953, Thunder Shocker Tombaugh was hospitalized. Tang Enbo said indignantly: "My illness cannot be cured in Taiwan, and hospitalization is useless." The only way to cure the disease is to go abroad. I applied to Japan for medical treatment, the president did not agree, there is no way, only waiting to die! ”
In April 1954, Tombaugh suddenly felt abdominal pain, and doctors found a tumor in his duodenum, which he judged might be cancer, and recommended that he go abroad for surgery. Tombaugh's family immediately sent a report to the "Presidential Palace" Chiang Kai-shek agreed.
On the evening of May 26, 1954, Tang Enbo, escorted by his family, boarded a Japanese flight to Tokyo, Japan. Tombaugh got off the plane and was taken to a hospital in Tokyo, Japan. During the operation, Tang Enbo died on the operating table due to excessive blood loss at the age of 56.
On the 30th, a number of newspapers in Taiwan published the news that Tang Enbo died of illness in Japan.
When Chiang Kai-shek learned that Tang Enbo was dead, his reaction was cold, and he only said one sentence: "It is better to die."
