Drifting with the BMW M4 is too hard
"The first project of our group D is to drive the M4 drift in the open space of the backcourt, everyone come with me!"
Arriving at the Guangdong International Circuit early in the morning, after a brief track briefing, the coach, a professional driver, arranged for us to practice semicircle drift. Fortunately, the instructor also showed us very intimately before getting on the bus.
I've been to simple drift training many years ago and I've had experience driving a small displacement after-driving drift, so I'm confident about semicircular drift practice.
In order, I was the last to start the group, and I saw that the previous media colleagues were slightly struggling when they drifted, either the car could not float, or the rear wheel idling the vehicle in place, and the nervousness gradually intensified. Finally it's my turn, turn on the drift mode of the vehicle and walk up! A foot of throttle, accompanied by the roar of the engine, the rear wheel immediately broke through the grip limit and began to idling, slightly turning the steering wheel, the rear of the car began to walk sideways, then along the steering wheel feedback force hit the direction, the result of the car went back to the straight line, the throttle did not keep up in time.
The second time, the same action continued, but the throttle was pressed a little more while hitting the steering wheel, and the car spun around. This was repeated a few times, and it was not until the fifth time that I completed the semicircle drift.
I didn't expect the semicircle drift to be so difficult, and this is still an M4 with a drift mode. In fact, drifting is an extreme driving technique that keeps the vehicle on the edge of loss of control, which means that the driver must have a very good control of the direction and throttle in order to make a more perfect drifting work.
However, the M4 is powered by a twin-turbo inline six-cylinder 3.0L engine code-named S58B30A, capable of delivering 375 kW of power and peak torque of 650 N·m in the 2750-5500 rpm rpm range. Such a powerful power output, even with an 8AT gearbox with a dense gear ratio, is not suitable for practicing drift. The reason is that it is difficult to delicately control the power output of the engine.
After seeing our performance, the coach said at the end: "This project is to let everyone know that a car like the M4 is difficult to save when it is out of control, and I hope that everyone will not try to make an action beyond their driving ability in the afternoon track experience." "It turned out that this drift project was meant to warn us.
Safety is the premise of passion
The next few projects are relatively simple, driving M5, M3, X4M to complete the full brake emergency change, high-speed pile winding, full braking through the U-turn several projects. These items are much simpler than drift exercises.
In the afternoon, you can finally drive the M3 on the track, this time driving the M3 is a rear-drive version of the model, the power system is the same as the M4, the maximum power is 375kW, the peak torque is 650N·m, and the 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 3.9 seconds. Perhaps many people do not have much concept of such power data, in fact, at any time to give a foot of "floor oil", the rear wheels can be idling. On the multi-bend track of Guangdong International Circuit, the requirements for drivers are quite high, and the slightest carelessness will rush out of the track in the corner.
Of course, I was confident in the sharp scalpel-like adjustment of the M3 chassis, and after a tentative lap, my movements gradually "went wild", the speed of the corner was constantly improved, and the throttle of the corner acceleration was gradually increased. As a result, in Turn 6, the rear of the car slipped a bit because the throttle was too large. Thanks to the morning training, I collected the oil in time and hit the steering wheel, and the restless M3 immediately calmed down.
In M mode, the body electronic stability system of BMW M series models is not in a fully open state, it allows the driver to enjoy the driving pleasure brought by powerful power and agile control under controlled conditions. Listening to the roar of the engine, smelling the pungent tire smoke, and watching the road being quickly skipped, the BMW M-Series models are able to use all means to provoke every nerve of the driver.
Being able to drive a variety of BMW M models on the track this time is actually the "2021 BMW Blood M City" event officially held by BMW. Over the years, BMW has continued to hold track experience activities, which not only provide users with a driving experience that is difficult to find in the city road, but also highlight the track gene of BMW M models, and more importantly, enable users to further improve their driving skills, so that daily travel is safer.
Driving training is not about driving faster, it's about being safer
This training in driving skills, in my opinion, is a compulsory course for driving high-performance cars. In the era of fuel vehicles, high-performance vehicles due to the generally high price, which means that the target users are not many, however, under the current wave of car electrification, most of the pure electric vehicles have the power performance comparable to million-level fuel vehicles, although this allows users to get more than high-value driving experience, but these new energy vehicle companies will at least train the owners of relevant driving skills, such a result, is undoubtedly to allow users to have vehicles beyond the driving ability range.
Perhaps everyone has seen some videos of driving high-performance cars out of control, and such accidents occur because the driver does not understand the performance of the car on the one hand; on the other hand, it is an overestimation of his driving ability and cannot fully control the vehicle.
