In early 1938, Wang Mingzhang was appointed commander-in-chief of the 41st Army, led his troops to participate in the Battle of Xuzhou, and was ordered to garrison Tengxian to snipe the Japanese army. Wang Mingzhang ordered that the south and north gates be blocked, and the east and west gates be temporarily retained for traffic roads, ready to be closed at any time, intending to stick to the county seat of TengXian County. Wang Mingzhang led the defenders of less than 3,000 men, and only 2,000 combatants. After the battle began, Wang Mingzhang personally went to the city to supervise the battle. The Japanese mechanized troops attacked fiercely for a day, but they could not capture a corner of the city wall. That night, the Japanese army mobilized 30,000 troops and more than 70 cannons to besiege TengXian county.
The weapons and ammunition of the Sichuan army led by Wang Mingzhang were all at a disadvantage, but Wang Mingzhang was not timid. He took the lead in the defense of Tengxian County, personally commanding soldiers to fight in the streets. In the end, he was unfortunately shot by the Japanese machine guns and martyred. Just after Wang Mingzhang's death, the officers and men of his 122nd Division fought to the last man, using grenades to die with the Japanese army, and almost all of the more than 5,000 people were killed.
After Wang Mingzhang's death, Zhou Tong, the county magistrate of TengXian County, changed his face and said to the people around him: "China will not die, and the people of Chinese will not yield!" After saying this, he suddenly jumped and fell from the city, and he was martyred. Zhou Tong served as the county magistrate of Teng County for only three months. On March 28, 1938, Wang Mingzhang's body was transported to Pei County and then transported to Xuzhou. In April, Wang Mingzhang was posthumously awarded the rank of general of the army. On May 2, Wang Mingzhang's body was transported to Xuzhou, and Li Zongren saw that Wang Mingzhang's body was full of blood, and his abdomen and intestines were mixed with mud, so he immediately took off his general's uniform to change wang Mingzhang, and personally selected a huge coffin for him.
