In fact, retrospectively, the emergence of this situation is related to a case in the history of the Ming Dynasty. The scholar who was titled on the gold list should have been happy, and although the scholar who fell off the list was not happy, he could only accept the reality that he was inferior to others. But Hongwu's thirty years (1397) meeting test was different, and those who were on the list and those who fell on the list were very angry.

Coincidentally, the 3 chief examiners of this subject were all southerners, and Liu Sanwu, an 85-year-old hanlin scholar who was very famous in Rulin, was from Chaling, Hunan. The northern scholars who fell off the list believed that Liu Sanwu was not a kind person, because he was from the south, he favored the southern scholars, resulting in the 51 people on the list could not find a northern origin.
Angry northern scholars ran around the streets of the capital, shouting injustice, suing Liu Sanwu to the Ministry of Ceremonies, and at the same time, they also found some northern ministers and asked them for help to thoroughly investigate the strangeness of this. Under the efforts of these northern scholars, things got bigger, and the ministers wrote a recital to tell Zhu Yuanzhang about the situation after he issued the list, and by the way explained the unfairness of the northern scholars.
Zhu Yuanzhang was also a little strange, he had never had such an uneven situation between the north and the south since the imperial examination, so why did he let himself crash? As a somewhat suspicious person, Zhu Yuanzhang immediately came up with many kinds of situations in which the chief examiner played tricks behind his back, and the more he thought about it, the more angry he became, and ordered a thorough investigation.
In this investigation, Zhu Yuanzhang was even more inexplicable, the results of the 51 southern scholars were very real, none of them could not withstand the test of the review, but on the basis of the northern scholars' examination papers, they wrote a lot of unreasonable and even let him see the things that were angry. This result was unacceptable to the scholars and ministers in the north, and they believed that the chief examiner Liu Sanwu and others were tricking the ghost.
Therefore, instead of calming the public anger, this investigation has caused a new wave of frenzy. The southern scholars were also very angry: We were admitted by our real ability, so why are the most southerners on the list necessarily fraudulent? The two sides quarreled and became a mess, and Zhu Yuanzhang, who was sitting in the palace, decided after careful consideration that this section would be invalidated, and Liu Sanwu and other personnel involved in it would be punished and a new admission list would be opened, and all 61 people on it would be northern scholars.
In fact, Zhu Yuanzhang did not know where the problem was, at that time, the population density in the south was large, the economic and cultural level was relatively high, and the southern scholars' collective high school, seemingly coincidental, actually had its inevitability. However, Zhu Yuanzhang hoped to appease people's hearts and end this series of evil consequences caused by the geographical imbalance in admission as soon as possible, and simply overturned all the previous lists, and Chen Anlan was even directly executed.
In the time of Emperor Akihito, Zhu Gaozi referred to this story and made the decision to maintain balance by "taking the soldiers in the field, in terms of ten points, the southern soldiers taking six points, and the northern soldiers four points". After Zhu Gaozi's death, Zhu Zhanji took the throne, and he also set up a system of dividing the imperial examination into the northern, middle, and southern volumes, and the admission of students by different places, and the quota was fixed.
Such a system even affected the college entrance examination in later generations. Zhu Yuanzhang estimated that he did not expect that the gap in educational resources between the north and the south was so large at that time that if he really studied according to his talents and did not consider other issues, it might cause more crises. It is just that Zhu Yuanzhang completely replaced the "south list" with the "north list", which is still criticized by historians.
