"Chariot of Fire," which was screened in the UK and won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1981, reflects the story of Scottish youth Liddell and Jewish student Abraham at the 1924 Paris Olympics, overcoming difficulties and winning both titles.
The 2016 film "The Ultimate Victory", staged in Chinese mainland and directed by Hong Kong director Xi Qiran, reflects the British Liddell (Chinese name Li Airui) (Joseph Fiennes) (Joseph Fiennes), willing to give up the quality of life he won because of the Olympic victory, to come to China, and was imprisoned in the Japanese Weixian concentration camp, where he rescued a large number of prisoners of war from various countries who were imprisoned by the Japanese in Weixian concentration camps.
Liddell in both films is the same man, a Scotsman who was born in 1902 to a family of British missionaries in Tianjin, China. After the age of 5, he left China and returned to Scotland to study. Shortly after becoming an Olympic champion, he began a missionary career in China like a father. In 1942, he was imprisoned by the Japanese army in a concentration camp in Weixian County (now Weifang), Shandong, and in 1945, when the war was about to end, he died of brain cancer in the concentration camp.
Later, the Weifang people built a monument for him at the place where he died, and the monument was made of granite from his hometown of Scotland.
On February 3, 2021, Weifang City was rated as an International City for Peace.
