Manchester United have reportedly been in talks with Atalanta over a potential loan deal for Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood has been suspended by Manchester United since 30 January 2022, after charges of attempted rape, acts of control and coercion and assault. The Royal Public Prosecution Service dropped the charges against Mason Greenwood in February, but the player remained suspended by United for the remainder of last season due to an internal investigation by the club. The 22-year-old's contract with Manchester United expires in June 2025, with the club entitled to extend it for another year.
United have been considering what to do with the 21-year-old and have reportedly held discussions with Atalanta about a possible loan loan to Serie A, amid talks between the two clubs over the possibility of a transfer for the main player. Manchester United targeted Rasmus Hoylund.
United have been in talks about the possibility of acquiring Hoylund and loaning Mason Greenwood to Bergamo in part in exchange, although it is understood that Atletico Madrid have asked Mason Greenwood and Borussia Dortmund are interested.
Greenwood has been photographed training alone in recent weeks and not returning to United for pre-season. Manchester United, hampered by the chase of England captain Harry Kane, have been seeking a deal for Hoilund in recent weeks as Tottenham Hotspur refused to sell. It has been reported in recent days that Atalanta are in talks over the Danish striker, although their asking price of €75 million to €80 million is prohibitive, while Manchester United are considering a deal of up to €60 million.
Talks are ongoing and United are optimistic they can strike a deal for Hoylund before the start of the new season. Eric Ten Haag and Manchester United are also close to striking deals after seeing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana's two offers rejected this week. Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea.
