Mason · Greenwood is officially no longer a Manchester United player after completing his permanent move to Ligue 1 side Marseille.
The 22-year-old has a transfer fee of around £25 million, including a surcharge, while it has been widely reported that United have retained a sale clause of up to 50% for possible future transfers. Mason Greenwood will wear Marseille's number 10 shirt next season.
A statement from his now former club read: "Mason · Greenwood has left Manchester United to move permanently to Olympic Club Marseille in France. The 22-year-old United Kingdom striker, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, Spain, has made 129 appearances for United since making his debut in 2019, scoring 35 goals. We wish Mason all the best in his future career. "
The move comes as Pierre-Emerick · Aubameyang left Stade Velodrome to join Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah, who scored 30 goals in all competitions last season. Greenwood's arrival has already been met with backlash as Marseille are reaching an agreement and the mayor has urged the club not to proceed with the transfer.
The player spent last season on loan at Getafe in La Liga and last played for Manchester United in January 2022 when he was arrested. He was later charged with assault, attempted rape and coercive control, although the prosecution dropped the case in February 2023, when key witnesses withdrew and the likelihood of conviction was greatly reduced.
Manchester United continue to conduct their own internal investigations. The club were initially prepared to reintroduce Greenwood into the first team until a strong rebound led to a 180-degree turn.
