The public's perception of the safety and emergency industry is a blend of the unfamiliar and the well-known. This conflict is pervasive amidst the industry's evolution from traditional to modern practices.

'Cutting-edge technology' empowers Guangdong's emergency rescue efforts

For example, enduring societal challenges have birthed new scenarios. There are age-old natural disasters like typhoons, floods, and fires, and on the other side, the safety issues of modern megacities with their unique complexities. Cutting-edge technologyis now at the forefront of both traditional and emerging safety scenarios. These technologies, which may include large-scale heavy machinery as well as nimble drones and unmanned boats, are reshaping the landscape of emergency response.

Recently, in Meizhou, Guangdong, continuous heavy rainfall led to dire situations such as trapped individuals, collapsed buildings, and damaged infrastructure. A variety of cutting-edge emergency technologies were deployed in these rescue operations—drones and other aerial emergency rescue equipment for aerial reconnaissance, unmanned boats and water rescue drones for emergency water rescue, and communication devices like ultra-short wave handheld radios and emergency broadcasting systems that can effectively convey information even amidst power and network failures.

The safety and emergency industry is integral to the economic and social framework, fostering the convergence of diverse technologies to spark new regional economic engines. In 2022, Guangdong's safety and emergency, along with energy-saving and environmental protection industries, reported a total business revenue of 305.846 billion yuan, marking a 22.34% increase since 2019.

Guangdong currently puts a particular emphasis on nurturing high-rise building firefighting, urban safety, natural disaster response, and emergency handling of hazardous materials accidents, and is prioritizing the development of intelligent monitoring and early warning systems, smart firefighting and emergency rescue, and emergency response to flood disasters.

It is reported that the Nanhai Industrial Park in Foshan stands as Guangdong's sole representative in the national safety and emergency industry demonstration base. Additionally, Jiangmen High-tech Industrial Development Zone and Dongguan Tangxia Safety and Emergency Industry Development Cluster are recognized as development units.

From June 16th to June 18th, 2024, the Guangzhou International Emergency Safety Expo (iESE 2024) showcased a plethora of intelligent rescue equipment. "Machine dogs" continuously patrol for security, replacing manual efforts to identify illegal intrusions or attacks in a timely manner; in the face of narrow and complex terrains such as tunnels, alleys, and garages, which are the most severely affected by urban waterlogging, the small and flexible drainage robots can drive into the flooded areas and quickly drain the waterlogged areas with pipes; walkie-talkies equipped with direct-connect functions ensure uninterrupted communication even during network and power outages. The expo reported an impressive intended transaction volume of 6.37 billion yuan over three days.

As technology and applications continue to innovate, the establishment of standards becomes increasingly critical. The Guangdong Safety and Emergency Industry Alliance (GDSEIA) is actively engaging with international standard-setting bodies to contribute to the development and revision of global standards for emergency equipment.

"Black technology" helps Guangdong's emergency safety

It is both strange and familiar, which is the public's impression of the safety and emergency industry. In the alternation of the old and the new in the industry, this sense of conflict is almost everywhere.

For example, old problems have given birth to new scenarios in social development, on the one hand, natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and fires that have existed since ancient times, and on the other hand, the security problems of super-megacities under the modern picture; For another example, new technologies are also "taking over" new and old scenarios, and what is called security emergency products may be large heavy equipment, or agile "black technology" such as drones and unmanned ships.

Recently, Meizhou, Guangdong Province has been affected by continuous heavy rainfall, and people have been trapped, houses have collapsed, roads have been washed out and other dangerous situations, and a large number of safety emergency "black technology" has been handy in rescue and disaster relief - drones and other aviation emergency rescue equipment survey site, unmanned ships, surface rescue unmanned boats for emergency rescue, ultra-short wave handheld radio, emergency broadcasting and other emergency communication equipment can effectively transmit information in the case of power failure and network failure......

The safety and emergency response industry serves the entire economy and society, and can also allow technologies in different fields to blend and collide to create a new regional economic growth point. In 2022, the total operating income of Guangdong's safety emergency, energy conservation and environmental protection industry will reach 305.846 billion yuan, an increase of 22.34% compared with the industrial scale in 2019.

At present, Guangdong mainly focuses on super high-rise fire fighting, urban safety, natural disasters, and emergency response to hazardous chemical accidents, and focuses on cultivating intelligent monitoring and early warning of safety emergencies, intelligent fire emergency rescue, and emergency response and rescue of flood disasters.

It is understood that Foshan Nanhai Industrial Park is the only national security emergency industry demonstration base selected in Guangdong; Guangdong also has two founding units: Jiangmen High-tech Industrial Development Zone and Dongguan Tangxia Safety Emergency Industry Development Cluster.

From June 16th to June 18th, the 2024 Guangzhou International Emergency Safety Expo was held, and a large number of intelligent rescue equipment were unveiled. The "robot dog" conducts non-stop security patrols to identify illegal intrusions or attacks in a timely manner instead of manual work; In the face of tunnels, alleys, garages and other narrow and complex terrain with the most serious urban waterlogging, the small and flexible drainage robot can drive into the flooded area and quickly drain the stagnant water with a water pipe; The walkie-talkie is equipped with a pass-through function, which can also ensure that people will not lose contact with each other in the event of network and power failure...... According to statistics, during the three-day exhibition, the total amount of intended transactions between the supply and marketing parties was 6.37 billion yuan.

With the continuous innovation of technology and application, standardization construction is also particularly urgent. The Guangdong Provincial Safety and Emergency Industry Alliance is actively connecting with the International Organization for Standardization, and proposing and participating in the formulation and revision of international standards for safety and emergency equipment in a timely manner.
