Studying abroad is to be able to go further on the road of design

After working for a period of time, I found that I still like to engage in design, although the work intensity is really high, and studying abroad is also to be able to go further on the road of architectural design.

I don't have any special internship or competition experience, if there is any confidence in it, it is the strong DDL drive and self-learning ability that I have developed during my work in the design institute.

The 20-year-old dream of Dongda has regrets, but this year it is very successful

As I wrote in the title, when I graduated, I really wanted to go to the University of Tokyo, on the one hand, because I liked the design style of many Japanese architects, but the main reason was that I was an old man, and I really wanted to study in Japan for personal reasons.

I graduated in 2020, and the year I graduated, due to the pandemic, the University of Tokyo canceled the master's exam, and I applied through a portfolio instead, and I passed the portfolio but failed in the interview stage. It's a pity to think about it now, but life has to go on, so I went straight to the design institute.

24Fall's application to North America is actually mainly for the consideration of fault tolerance, and you can apply to as many schools as possible. As for my future plans, I would like to continue to work on architectural design, and I hope to be able to work on more interesting projects after graduation.

What is your dream in North America?

They are all very good universities, and when I applied for them, I would go to whichever one I thought would be kind enough to take me in (laughs). If you have enough time to choose a school, you can take a look at the designs of graduates of each school and learn more about the design style of that school.

Why Rice?

It's interesting because the time is relatively tight, I basically didn't know about the school when I started to choose a school, and SA didn't have a "no one is missing" column, and when I chose a school, I chose eight schools based on the application experience of the students in it. In the end, Ms. Cai from SA suggested that I choose another school, and that school was Rice, but I didn't expect that this school would be my final choice.

As for why I chose LESER, the high-quality educational resources brought by the high teacher-student ratio are very important, and I also like the solid design style of LESER. Another important reason is the enthusiasm of the professors and students of the school, and I had a good time chatting with them at the open house, and I can feel that the Rice Department of Architecture is a very loving group.

Although I didn't encounter an interview, I also did some sharing~

The universities I applied to didn't have a real interview, and I only encountered a two-minute interview that UPenn could choose to do, but I had a lot of experience communicating with professors after receiving the offer. The professors I met were very considerate, and they would take into account that the applicants were from non-native English speaking countries, so it didn't matter if there were minor flaws during the interview, just be confident and speak up!

The subject of the instrument

The essay mainly focuses on "reconciliation" and explores the harmonious role of architecture in different use scenarios, which is actually a bit cliché, after all, the portfolio is "Pinduoduo", and it is only under the guidance of the clerical teacher that a feasible main line can be clarified. In order to reduce the time spent writing essays, I didn't go to schools with tricky essay requirements when I was choosing a school, and it was basically a small revision of this one.

Except for the residential project, which was new, the other four projects were re-drawn based on the undergraduate/work design (after all, the decision to apply was relatively late, and the application process was already rushed)

The portfolio is inspired by the place of birth

Most of the works in the portfolio are based on undergraduate designs from a few years ago, and they span a large period of time, so there is no clear main theme. If there is one thing in common, it is that most of the design sites are in Wuhan and the surrounding area. I have been in the city since I was born and worked, and my understanding of Wuhan has provided me with a lot of inspiration, and there are many discussions about the history and humanity of the city.

The most satisfying work

I would like to focus on the only new design in the portfolio, because I happened to need to add a school "Writing Sample" at that time, and I wrote about the architectural appreciation of the Tama Art University Library designed by Toyo Ito, whose preservation of natural topography and the definition of interior space by arches inspired me a lot, and I also explored the possibilities of this "field" formed by the topography to bring different forms and functions to the space in this residential design.

Old two-dimensional + roller skating enthusiasts

First up are ACG, anime manga and games, the favorite anime is a game made by 5pb. with the anime adaptation of the same name Steins; Gate", the little friends who are tired of doing the portfolio may wish to take a look!

There is also roller skating, the feeling of flying is very decompressing, and the most important thing is that after wearing roller skates, the height is directly one meter eight, and the whole person is more confident!

The building was tiring but also enjoyable

I am very tired and happy, and there are often many restrictions on design after work, and "do what I want to design" is a joy that students can enjoy.

Words to the younger students

I didn't pay much attention to building structures and building materials in college, and I passed low marks in both courses, and it was only after I worked that I realized how important they were to architects. They are the foundation for design, and we should pay attention to the core of the building while paying attention to the software and graphic expression.

You must be able to play while learning, and the combination of work and rest is very important! If you encounter a bottleneck in the design, you can try to put down the design first and play with it, and you can always get unexpected inspiration when you are happy!

Finally, no matter what, the body is always the most important, and I hope that no matter how busy the younger students are, they will not sacrifice their sleep time and take care of their health. I wish you all the best of luck getting the school you want to go to!

Final thanks

There are so many people I want to thank, and the most grateful ones are of course my parents, who have given me the greatest support every time I make a choice, and they have always been my most solid support.

I am very grateful to Ms. Ye Chang, Ms. Diane Yu, Ms. Anne and Ms. Dina Lin for their help in the process of portfolio, essays, application and school selection.

I am very grateful to Mr. Liu and Mr. Li from the University and Mr. Peng from the Design Institute, who recommended me when I applied for the high job.

In addition, I would like to thank my good brothers who have accompanied me in college for five years, "Secretary Zhao", "Frontier", "Louiscon" and "President Yuan", and wish you all the best in the future!
