Sweden will see these changes from July

Sweden's new laws usually come into effect every six months in January or July, so there are more changes than usual this month.

01

Empower people to find people who are evading prosecution

JULY

The new law, which will take effect on July 1, will allow authorities to covertly monitor electronic communications and data if the Swedish government deems it necessary to find wanted criminals, while also making it easier for authorities to locate foreigners they deem a threat to Swedish security.

It can only be used to assist in the execution of sentences of people sentenced to prison, receiving forensic psychiatric treatment, or closed juvenile care.

02

For students with special needs

Provide better support

JULY

Currently, schools that teach students with special educational needs are eligible for the so-called tilläggsbelopp or supplementary amount, which is an additional subsidy in addition to the basic funds paid by the municipality to the school, depending on the student's needs.

Currently, the application process is often complex, and many students who need support must fight for it in order to receive it.

This new law aims to make the application process more streamlined and equal, reducing administrative work for schools, students, and municipalities.

The law will go into effect on July 1, but it won't be implemented in schools until the fall semester.

03

Cancel the business owner hold

Requirements for original accounting records

JULY

Another law, which will go into effect on July 1, will remove the requirement for businesses to keep any original paper accounting documents. Starting next month, businesses will no longer need to do so if documents have already been digitized.

It would also remove the requirement that companies must hire the same auditor to perform accounting and auditing tasks, and instead allow companies to hire auditors while using separate technology solutions for their own accounting work.

04

Temporarily increase the ROT deduction

JULY

The so-called ROT deduction in Sweden provides a tax deduction for labor costs for repairs, remodeling, or expansion work. It is closely related to the RUT deduction, which offers similar discounts for household work, such as cleaning, gardening work, childcare, or laundry services.

Currently, the ROT deduction is capped at CZK 50,000 and RUT and ROT combined at CZK 75,000.

From July 1 to December 31, the cap will be temporarily raised, and a separate cap will be introduced instead of the RUT and ROT totaling 75,000 kroner. This means that taxpayers will be able to deduct up to CZK 75,000 for RUT and another CZK 75,000 for ROT work throughout 2024.

05

Revise school regulations

More paper textbooks are available

JULY

Another law, which will go into effect on July 1, will modify school regulations to require students to use textbooks for free and any other study materials and tools they need to learn.

This is part of the government's larger goal of reducing the use of school screens, investing in school librarians, and providing schools with more money to buy physical books.

06

Swedish ministers raise salaries

JULY

From the beginning of July, the salaries of Swedish government ministers will increase. According to the decision of the Parliamentary Ministers' Remuneration Committee, their monthly salaries have risen by 3.7%.

The annual salary review means that Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's salary will increase by SEK 7000 and his monthly salary will rise to SEK 198000. The salaries of other ministers have risen by SEK 5500 to SEK 156000.

07

holiday

JULY

Schools across Sweden end the school year in the last two weeks of June, so almost all Swedish children have a holiday in July. Most adults in Sweden take at least three weeks off during the summer holidays, starting in the first or second week of July.

So, if you're not taking a vacation, be warned: it can be difficult to get any response from your colleagues (whether within your own company or at another company) in July.
