Interior Design Laboratorium designed the Parilio Hotel on the Greek island of Paros, which is part of the Design Hotels. The design is inspired by the beautiful and rustic architecture of the Cycladic and the pristine land and sparkling sunshine that are unique to Paros.
▼ Hotel appearance
"Helios, my sun god, let me shine in the echoes of your golden light"
Parilio is located in the lush meadows and reeds of the island, next to the famous Kolympithres beach. Parilio means "halo of the sun", a bright brilliance that shines as sunlight passes through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The architecture of the Cyclades archipelago is a mesmerizing landscape illuminated by the sun, which is the inspiration for the hotel's design – to create a living experience that slows down time.
▼From the pool deck, you can see the hotel building and the island view
The design team conducted the first survey of the existing building in December 2018. The original hotel was built in the 1980s and is divided into 6 buildings with a total of 55 rooms. The buildings follow the typical outline of the island and occupy 7 acres of grounds. The new building has undergone a complete overhaul in both indoor and outdoor spaces, with redesigned areas including 33 suites, reception area, restaurant, swimming pool, surrounding area and spa. The construction period is from January 2019 to July 2019.

▼The sunlit building creates an intoxicating scenery
The Parilio seeks to return to the traditional principles of Cycladic architecture through a simple and refined design, while using the traditional houses and fortress architecture of Paros as the main source of inspiration. The reception area, as the premier space that attracts guests, is conceived as a modern sanctuary, with long narrow windows and a unique and massive arched entrance that brings an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Such scenes take one back to decades past, when life on Cyclades was as pure as the sun itself.

The aesthetic conveyed by the design is based on an in-depth and rigorous analysis, harmoniously combining old and new elements, including modern and vintage furniture and materials, to form a new frame of reference, placing guests in a traditional environment created with modern architectural methods. Traces of traditional techniques such as knitwear and ceramics can be easily found here. Potters from Morocco, Crete and Copenhagen have also designed a series of functional vessels, including pottery and jars, to respond to the unique views of the Koukounaries cliffs. At the top of the cliff sits one of the most important acropolis of the Aegean Sea. This pristine land inspires the choice of materials and colours for the Parilio Hotel.

The striking whites of the island's traditional houses combine with the hues of the cliffs – shades of brown and beige, and a slightly faded yellow that can be found between the rocks.

All the colors from the cliff are applied to the interior of the rooms to create a harmony with the surrounding natural environment. Each room is fully connected to the landscape, providing a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Most of the furniture has been custom-made for the hotel by the design team, matching the marble and textiles of the Cyclades. On the headboard of each room hangs a unique art tapestry designed for the hotel by the famous Moroccan home décor brand LRNCE.

The focal point of the exterior design is the bright yellow tent, which is one of the most distinctive elements of the hotel. The balcony of the suite is furnished with tables and chairs designed by Vincent Van Duysen. Natural boulders emerge from the crystal clear water of the pool and draw attention completely. The pool is shaped like a cross, and the entrance is framed to create a cliff landscape that resembles an ancient acropolis. The strong imagery makes the Cycladic landscape more prominent, and at the same time shows a new way of integrating architecture with nature.
