Latin American architect Studio Saxe designed a resort hotel in a tropical rainforest in Costa Rica. The hotel, called Nalu, consists of several scattered cottages in the woods and a yoga studio hidden in the shade. It inherits the firm's long-held philosophy: to combine contemporary design with indigenous craftsmanship and to create a building that blends in with the natural environment.
▼The resort is located in the middle of a tropical rainforest
"The Nalu Hotel represents a simple, unpretentious, modern tropical architectural design. It quickly became the most popular place in the neighborhood, which shows the desire to find a place where you can be close to nature while at the same time having comfortable and modern living conditions. ”
— 建筑师 Benjamin Garcia Saxe
▼Each villa is surrounded by beautiful scenery while keeping a distance from each other
▼ A private courtyard with a swimming pool
In recent years, Nosara has become a world-renowned health and surfing destination. The owners, Nalu-Nosara, Nomel and Mariya Libid, wanted to make the project an attractive resort project. The yoga studio is a particularly attractive place – it is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers a tranquil environment where people can enjoy complete relaxation.
▼ Guests can exercise or meditate in the jungle
The rooms are self-contained pavilion-style villas, just walking distance from the sea. By splitting up the traditional detached hotel, the architect could distribute the building in the jungle, creating an intimate space that is completely immersed in nature. The location of each villa has been meticulously calculated for wind direction and sunshine, while ensuring that every room has an open view of the landscape. Overlapping wooden roofs cantilevered the walls, and wide eaves protect against the scorching sun. The wooden roofs are hand-stitched together from reclaimed teak panels, resulting in uneven joints, bringing craftsmanship into modern architecture. The rooms inside are connected by corridors. The top of the corridor is covered with a pergola, which both shields from the sun and brings the surrounding views into the room.
