Preface:
In 1950, Du Yuming, who was in the Gongdelin War Criminals Management Center in Beijing, suddenly received bad news that his son Du Zhiren hanged himself because he could not afford to pay the tuition fees of United States University!
After receiving this news, Du Yuming was like five thunderbolts, and he said on the spot that he wanted to cut off with Lao Jiang, and until his death in his later years, he told his wife and several children that he must not go to Taiwan to settle down.
As a former lieutenant general of the Kuomintang, Chiang Kai-shek's firefighting captain Du Yuming also had a high prestige within the Kuomintang at the beginning, and maintained a non-cooperative attitude for a long time after being captured by our party.
Then for such a "loyal minister", why would Chiang Kai-shek be so cruel to his son and refuse to even pay the tuition fees? Why did Du Yuming tell his wife and children in his later years that they must not go to Taiwan to settle down?
On January 10, 1949, the Huaihai Battle ended successfully. Du Yuming, a senior Kuomintang general who was then the lieutenant general commander of the Kuomintang Northeast Security Command and the deputy commander of the Xuzhou "Suppression Commander", was captured by the People's Liberation Army.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Du Yuming and 42 other Kuomintang prisoners of war were sent to the Gongdelin War Criminals Management Center in Beijing for ideological reform.
At first, Du Yuming felt that he was a dead end, so he was extremely resistant to ideological education and labor reform, and tried to continue to be a hero of the "party-state" and leave a way out for his wife and children.
But what he didn't know was that shortly after he was captured, his wife Cao Qingxiu received a letter from Chiang Kai-shek, asking her to immediately take her children to Taiwan on the last Kuomintang plane from Shanghai, and promising to ensure the family's livelihood and children's tuition fees after arriving in Taiwan.
When her husband did not know whether to live or die, and there was no way to settle down in the future, Cao Qingxiu could only bring her five children to Taipei, but soon after they arrived in Taipei, the Kuomintang government immediately changed its mind, and almost all the conditions promised before were nullified.
Cao Qingxiu was only given a pitiful subsidy every month, which was not enough to maintain the daily expenses of the family, and Cao Qingxiu also found Song Meiling, Zhang Qun and others during this period, but they all ended in vain.
In order to support a few children, the wife of a former Kuomintang lieutenant general can only rely on odd jobs to support her family's livelihood.
And Du Yuming's eldest son, who was studying in United States at the time, Du Zhiren had no source of tuition fees, so he could only go to school during the day and work for others at night to earn tuition, living a hungry and full life, and his life was very difficult.
During this period, he wrote to his mother hoping that the family could help him, but at that time, it was already difficult for Cao Qingxiu to support the rest of the children, and where was there any extra money to help his son.
In desperation, she had to find Chiang Kai-shek in the hope that he could let her son finish college in United States for the sake of Du Yuming's past merits, and Chiang Kai-shek specially approved Du Zhiren $1,000 as a stipend after careful consideration.
But at that time, Du Zhiren's tuition fee in the United States for one year was 3,000 US dollars, and this 1,000 yuan was simply a drop in the bucket for him, not to mention that Chiang Kai-shek had to pay for this money in two years, which was clearly naked humiliation!
So under grief and indignation, Du Zhiren chose to take a large amount of sleeping pills and ended his young life.
When the news reached Taipei, Cao Xiuqing was devastated, and her husband followed Chiang Kai-shek to fight for decades, but in the end they ended up destitute, which made her infinitely disappointed in the Kuomintang government.
Soon after, Du Yuming, who was in the war criminals management center, also learned about this, and then his thinking changed dramatically, and he began to actively cooperate with the reform mission, and finally he was included in the first batch of war criminals amnesty list, and was released early on December 4, 1959.
On the other hand, after our party learned about the situation of Du Yuming's family, it immediately began to try to let them know about Du Yuming's situation and not do anything stupid.
In the end, we finally contacted Du Yuming's daughter Du Zhili through the help of Yang Zhenning's teacher Zhang Wenyu, and some people may be curious about how Yang Zhenning's teacher knew Du Yuming's daughter?
This starts with the death of Du Zhiren, after the death of her brother Du Zhiren, Du Zhili, who was also studying in United States, did not get much better, in order to reduce the cost of tuition, she could only transfer to St. Vincent College in New York.
On Christmas Day 1949, Du Zhili and his friends came to a Chinese restaurant for dinner, and happened to meet Yang Zhenning, who also came here to eat.
After that, Yang Zhenning launched a crazy pursuit of Du Zhili, and finally the two received a marriage certificate in August 1950 and held a wedding in New York.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, we invited Yang Zhenning to return to China many times, but considering his wife's sensitive status, he never agreed.
In 1957, Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize in Physics, and after the news was transmitted back to China, the whole country was shaken, and the mainland immediately increased its invitation to Yang Zhenning, but where Yang Zhenning went in the end actually depends on the meaning of his wife Du Zhili.
Soon after, Du wrote a letter to her mother, who was far away in Taiwan, in which she vaguely hoped that her mother would bring her family to United States to join her.
However, after discovering this letter, the Taiwan authorities immediately gave them "special attention": Du Yuming's wife and children are not allowed to leave Taiwan again! This made Cao Xiuqing immediately fall into a desperate situation.
In 1958, Song Meiling suddenly sent a car to pick up Cao Xiuqing to the Shilin Residence, saying that she had something to tell her. This made Cao Xiuqing quite stunned, after all, she had been snubbed by the Kuomintang government for many years, how could Song Meiling suddenly think of herself?
After the two met, Song Meiling immediately greeted him cordially, took Cao Xiuqing's hand and said affectionately: "Mrs. Du, congratulations to your son-in-law Dr. Yang Zhenning for winning the Nobel Prize, you should go to the United States to see him!" ”
Hearing the other party's words, Cao Xiuqing couldn't believe her ears for a while, and she didn't know why the Kuomintang government was suddenly so generous to herself, but Song Meiling's next sentence quickly made her understand the other party's true purpose.
I listened to Song Meiling continue: "Mrs. Du, I hope that when you return from United States, you will also bring Yang Zhenning back to Taiwan and let him assist President Chiang in counterattacking the mainland." ”
And not long after Song Meiling said this, Chiang Kai-shek also walked in and asked Cao Qingxiu pretendly, "How are the children?" How is your body? ”
At this time, Cao Qingxiu didn't know what they were doing, so she only heard her say coldly: "The eldest son committed suicide last year because he had no money to go to school, and my health is not good." ”
Hearing Cao Qingxiu's answer, Rao was a little unbearable with Chiang Kai-shek's thick skin, and after he said a few more casual words, he immediately walked out.
Soon after, the Kuomintang government "granted" Cao Qingxiu a six-month leave to visit relatives in United States, and after coming to United States, her daughter and son-in-law applied for a long-term residence permit for her, and she never returned to Taiwan.
In 1963, Cao Qingxiu crossed thousands of mountains and rivers and finally returned to the motherland to reunite with her husband, and then in 1971, China and the United States began exchanges, Yang Zhenning visited China, met his father-in-law for the first time, and was cordially received and invited by Premier Zhou with his father-in-law's family.
In 1981, Du Yuming walked through the last years accompanied by his wife and daughter, and before he died, he held his wife's hand tightly and said weakly: "Don't ...... Don't go to Taiwan, they ...... They don't deserve ......"
