Nintendo's Switch hardware and software sales have fallen sharply as the console nears its end.
In its latest earnings report, Nintendo said console sales were down 46.3% year-over-year, while software sales were down 41.3% year-over-year.
However, this is mainly due to the great success that Nintendo has achieved in 2023. The release of the Super Mario Bros. movie "stimulated" game sales, while the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom boosted sales of software and hardware.
"There were no such special factors in the first quarter of this fiscal year, and the Nintendo Switch is now in its eighth year since its launch, with both hardware and software sales falling significantly year-over-year," the report said.
However, during the quarter, both Paper Mario: The Gate of the Millennium and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD surpassed 1 million units sold, reaching 1.76 million and 1.19 million units, respectively. "Peach's Princess: The Show Happens," meanwhile, has sold more than 1.3 million units since its release in March.
Lifetime sales of the Switch currently stand at 143.42 million units, up from 141.32 million units in the previous report. Nintendo's forecast remains unchanged, with 13.5 million units expected to be sold this fiscal year, making the Switch the highest-selling console of all time, surpassing the Nintendo DS's 15,402 units.
Nintendo also reiterated its release plans for the rest of the year to boost console sales and achieve the desired goals.
There is no mention of a successor to the Switch in this report, although Nintendo is expected to announce the Switch 2 sometime before the end of the fiscal year on April 1, 2025.
