The phone does not turn off 24 hours a day
Before retiring, Lu Shengmei was the vice president and chief physician of the Department of Pediatrics at the People's Hospital of Jia County, Shaanxi. After retiring, she insisted on going to the hospital every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. When she is not in the hospital, many parents will bring their children to the cave where she lives to see a doctor, even in the middle of the night, she will not shirk.
"My phone doesn't turn off 24 hours. Generally, when you call in the middle of the night, the patient is seriously ill. In order to facilitate patients' treatment, Jia County People's Hospital opened a special consultation room for Lu Shengmei. When Lu Shengmei came here in 1968, there were only two rows of old-fashioned caves, four doctors and two nurses. Local people often do not receive timely and effective treatment when they fall ill, and minor illnesses become major illnesses and even lose their lives.
A visit shortly after arriving in Jia County made Lu Shengmei unforgettable. In a dimly lit cave, a woman is giving birth. After the baby is born, a pair of rusty, unsterilized scissors is prepared to cut the umbilical cord. Lu Shengmei learned about the reason for the high incidence of neonatal tetanus in the local area.
"We did our best to popularize the knowledge of the new method of midwifery, and even we went to the countryside to do the work of the new method of midwifery." "If we don't come here and don't popularize the new law of delivery, the women and children here will continue to suffer," Lu said. After doing these things, I felt that the basic neonatal tetanus here is gone, and it is all the new method of delivery. ”

"He's a husband and a guide"
In the early days of Jia County, relying on a sense of accomplishment bit by bit, Lu Shengmei survived the difficult adaptation period. She had never lived in a cave, and building a fire was the first thing she had ever encountered, and every time she had made the house full of smoke and dust. After tossing a few times, she simply stopped burning and curled up on the cold clay kang at night to sleep, and later slowly learned to make a fire with the help of her colleagues and fellow villagers. For a long time, the local domestic water was brought from the Yellow River by donkeys, which was not only muddy, but also only one scoop per person per day. Moreover, at that time, the hospital implemented the "half-doctor, half-work" system, Lu Shengmei got up before dawn every day to repair terraces and roads, and then went to the hospital to work night shifts after finishing work in the afternoon. The difficulties of reality, coupled with the pain of homesickness, also made her yearn to return to the big city.
"Our generation is what we say, and we can't back down. During that process, what supported me was a quote from our teacher, 'Even if you are in the crack of a stone, remember that your vocation is to relieve the pain of others, and you should remember this.' ’”
Cold comes and summer, spring goes to autumn, Lu Shengmei is like a seed, sprouting and taking root in the yellow earth in the northwest. In Lu Shengmei's words, she is a person who is easily emotional, and in the process of doing her best to help treat patients, she has developed feelings for the people here.
There is also a young man who makes Lu Shengmei feel emotional, his name is Gao Zhengsheng, a local youth, who became a nurse in Jia County People's Hospital after graduating from health school. In the third year of Lu Shengmei's arrival in Jia County, the two got married and started a family.
Train healthcare workers out of pocket
Founded the Department of Pediatrics of Jia County People's Hospital
Lu Shengmei studied pediatrics, but when she first arrived, there was no independent pediatrics in the hospital, and the professional team and treatment level were insufficient. Once, a four-month-old baby who was in a spastic cough phase because of whooping cough came to the hospital, and the treatment lasted from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the rescue was carried out more than 30 times, but the result ended in failure. But the child's mother knelt down for the medical staff present and thanked them for their dedication. It was this kneeling that made Lu Shengmei determined to build the pediatric department of the hospital. To this end, she enlisted support from various sources, went out to study, raised start-up funds, and also paid for the training of medical staff out of her own pocket. In 1984, the Department of Pediatrics of Jia County People's Hospital was formally established, and Lu Shengmei served as the first director of pediatrics.
In order to improve the professional and technical level of pediatrics, Lu Shengmei decided that the first task was to improve the pediatric venipuncture technology.
With the unremitting efforts of Lu Shengmei and her team, the Department of Pediatrics of Jia County People's Hospital has developed into the backbone department of the hospital, and the level of diagnosis and treatment has been continuously improved, which has been widely recognized by patients.
"As long as there is a breath there
I'll do as much as I can."
Walking on the streets of Jiaxian County, many people can recognize Lu Shengmei. If you count the 25 years after retirement, Lu Shengmei has been practicing medicine here for 56 years.
In the 80s of the 20th century, with the changes of the environment of the times, the same group of young people who came to Jia County with Lu Shengmei began to return to their respective cities, and Lu Shengmei also got the opportunity to return to Beijing and other big cities to work, but she gave up. "I'm used to the conditions in this place, but I can't really get used to it in a big city. Mainly emotionally, reluctant to do this. ”
In 2007, her husband Gao Zhengsheng passed away due to illness, leaving endless nostalgia for Lu Shengmei.
"A few days ago, I read a book written by Fan Jinshi, and she felt sorry for the child, and I also felt sorry for the child. Especially when you are busy with work, you are not allowed to think about the child, so you forget the child, and after the patient is treated and rescued, the child feels really pitiful. Because she put all her efforts into her career, Lu Shengmei also left a sense of guilt for her children in her heart.
Talking about winning the national honorary title of "People's Medical Worker" this time, Lu Shengmei repeatedly emphasized that she "can't afford it", she said, "I'm just a little doctor in the county, why should I put it together with those heroes who study aerospace." But as long as I have a breath of air, I will do as much as I can."
