Digital Mirrors of Song Dynasty Imprints: At the SMP 2024 Computational History Forum, we unveil a journey through time and space, focusing on "Digital Mirrors of Song Dynasty Imprints". This theme not only captures the rich details of the history of the Song Dynasty, but also presents us with a new perspective of historical research through digital means. Here, history is no longer a dusty memory, but an active, perceptible reality. Starting from the insights of qualitative mirror research, we explore how historical texts capture and reproduce historical reality. These studies delve into the narrative details, linguistic style, and subjective interpretations of the text, revealing the construction and understanding of historical events, character behaviors, and social structures in the text through in-depth analysis of a small number of selected texts. They allow us to gain insight into the underlying logic and cultural assumptions in the text, giving us a richer, multi-dimensional perception of history. Quantitative mirror research, on the other hand, takes a broad perspective and uses digital humanities tools to analyze a large number of historical texts. It uses computational methods to identify patterns of key vocabulary, thematic distribution, and emotional color in texts, revealing topics and trends that are prevalent in a large number of historical texts, as well as their evolution over time. In this forum, we had the pleasure of listening to experts and scholars in different fields share their insights. They used digital technology to conduct in-depth research on the historical imprints of the Song Dynasty, from the digital interpretation of Chengxun's diary to the analysis of the kinship network of the epitaphs of the Song Dynasty, from the construction of the knowledge graph of the Zizhi Tongjian to the GIS spatial analysis of the economy and culture of the Song Dynasty. We look forward to witnessing this digital exploration of the history of the Song Dynasty with you, and discovering the infinite possibilities contained in the digital mirror image of the Song Dynasty imprint. This is not only a review of the past, but also a revolution in the way of historical research, allowing us to navigate the sea of numbers and explore the depth and breadth of history.

Speaker: Xiaoru Yuan (Researcher, School of Intelligence, Peking University)
Title: Intelligence-Driven Visual Analysis of Ancient Cultural Data Interaction
Abstract:The paradigm change of research in the era of big data affects various disciplines, and visualization and visual analysis that closely combines human intelligence with the powerful computing power of machines play an important role in it. The report will introduce the recent cross-research topics of visual analysis carried out by the visualization laboratory in close cooperation with various humanities and social science researchers, including the evolution of ancient faience pattern images, the exploration of ancient book catalogs, and the temporal and spatial circulation of Chinese books. In particular, we focus on understanding and analyzing the historical data of the Song Dynasty through visual methods, such as the interactive exploration of Song Dynasty characters and the engraved maps of Song Dynasty books and periodicals. On the one hand, these works provide new tools for scholars in the field of history and culture to support more efficient exploration and discovery, and on the other hand, they also provide a way for the public to understand the expertise in the field and provide ideas for the development of new exhibition methods.
Guest Profile: Yuan Xiaoru is a researcher at the School of Intelligence, Peking University, executive deputy director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data Analysis and Application, and deputy director of the Key Laboratory of Machine Perception and Intelligence of the Ministry of Education. He has long been committed to the research of general basic methods and domain application systems of visualization and visual analysis; Carry out cross-cooperation with the fields of history and humanities, and design and build a visual analysis system to support complex tasks such as spatiotemporal circulation and content evolution. ChinaVis, member of the IEEE VIS, PacificVis Steering Committee, editorial board member of IEEE TVCG and other domestic and foreign journals. Director of the Visualization and Visual Analysis Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics.

Title: What are Humanities Scholars in the Construction of Humanities Database: Taking the Extraction of Relatives of Epitaphs in the Song Dynasty as an Example
Abstract: Although there is a division of labor between humanities scholars and information technology scholars in the process of building databases, they should cooperate with each other. Humanities scholars, as researchers and participants in database construction, should not only assume the responsibility of literature analysis, but also actively learn information technology, assume technical responsibility, and make due contributions to the improvement of technology in database construction. Only in this way can information technology better serve the construction of databases, improve the efficiency of database construction, and improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness of information.
Guest Profile: Chen Peihui, Ph.D. from Peking University, visiting scholar at Harvard University, is currently an associate researcher at the School of Philosophy and Social Development of Shandong University, with research interests in Confucian political philosophy, Song and Ming Dynasty science, and digital humanities.

Title: Knowledge Extraction from Historical Texts
Abstract:Information extraction can extract structured information from unstructured texts, which is an effective means to realize the intellectualization of historical texts. Therefore, we have carried out a research on information extraction based on the text of Zizhi Tongjian, covering the modeling of contextual and external knowledge, the impact of annotation norms, the application of large language models, and the ability of models to transfer to different periods and types of texts. On this basis, starting from the idea that the "four keys" of historical research are the official system, historical geography, chronology, and bibliography, we study the construction of historical text and event datasets around major historical events, so as to explore the historical representation model based on "people, times, events, places, and things".
Guest Profile: Zuo Jiali is an associate professor at the School of Computer and Information Engineering, Jiangxi Normal University, a member of the Information Retrieval Committee, the Computational Linguistics Committee, and the Social Media Processing Committee of the Chinese Society of Chinese and Informatics, the deputy leader of the Computational History Professional Group, and a member of the Visualization and Visual Analysis Committee of the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics. His research interests include natural language processing, information retrieval, and digital humanities. He has presided over and participated in a number of national and provincial projects, and published more than 30 academic papers in relevant international and domestic journals and conferences.

Title: Geospatial Visualization of Song Dynasty Literature Based on Hybrid GIS--- Taking the Legend of Wutai Mountain as an Example
Abstract: This study takes the "Legend of Santiantai Wutai Mountain" written by the Japan monk Cheng Xun in the Northern Song Dynasty as an example to explore the application of hybrid GIS technology in the visualization of geospatial information in Song Dynasty documents. There are a large number of place names and qualitative descriptions of geospatial relationships in historical documents, but due to the relative lack of surviving map data of the Song Dynasty, it is difficult to determine the specific location of many place names in the literature. In order to solve this problem, this study proposes a hybrid GIS method, which combines large-scale text analysis and artificial intelligence technology to extract geographic information in literature by using large models, so as to realize the effective visualization of geographic information in literature. With the help of large models and innovative GIS technology, this study hopes to improve the understanding and expression of geographic information in Song Dynasty documents, and promote the cross-integration of humanities and geographic information science.
Guest Profile: Zhang Guangwei is a lecturer at the School of History and Culture, Shaanxi Normal University. He is the director of the Silk Road History and Culture Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center (provincial level) of Shaanxi Normal University, the director of the Digital Chang'an R&D Center of the International Academy of Chang'an Studies, the secretary-general of the National History Laboratory Construction Alliance, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the International Education Cooperation Association (GPE). He is mainly engaged in the work and research of the combination of computer science and history: (1) automatic recognition and transcription of Chinese ancient books based on deep learning, automatic recognition and information extraction of ancient maps; (2) The application of virtual simulation experiment technology in historical research and teaching, the technical leader of the national first-class undergraduate virtual simulation experiment course "Dunhuang Grottoes Historical Practice Teaching Virtual Simulation Experiment". He has published nearly 20 related research papers, and participated in and presided over a number of national, provincial and ministerial social science fund and natural science foundation projects.
