At present, many oil companies in Japan are actively competing for waste cooking oil resources. Cosmo, another major oil company, also unveiled its first sustainable aviation fuel production base in Japan for the first time last month, which is expected to be officially completed within the year. By blending SAF with conventional aviation fuel at a ratio of 3:7, the company can fly 700 times a year from Tokyo to London, and the waste cooking oil used by the company is recycled from restaurants, among other things. At present, Japan's three major oil companies have indicated that they will import waste cooking oil from overseas in order to ensure production in the future.

Japan is accelerating the popularization and production of sustainable aviation fuel, on the one hand, the increase in the number of international routes has increased the demand for aviation fuel; On the other hand, the global goal of reducing carbon emissions is becoming more and more urgent. Statistics show that 500,000 tons of waste cooking oil are produced in Japan a year, of which 80% come from restaurants and 20% from households. Every 1 litre of waste cooking oil can be made into about 800 ml of sustainable aviation fuel. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said at an expert meeting on September 30 that it would require Japan's major oil refiners to produce sustainable aviation fuel and said it would provide relevant policy support.

Compared to conventional aviation fuel, sustainable aviation fuel can reduce CO2 emissions by about 80%, but due to the high production cost, the current price is 3 to 5 times that of conventional aviation fuel, and production is limited, so domestic use in Japan is not large. Some airlines in Japan China have recently signed agreements with catering, commercial and trade companies, and oil companies related to sustainable aviation fuel. With the gradual rollout and accelerated production, the Japan government expects to use 10% of the total aviation fuel, or 1.7 million kiloliters, by 2030.
