The third anniversary of the establishment of the Giant Panda National Park: Olympic champions join hands with the Giant Panda National Park to write a new chapter in ecological protection

Red Star News Network (Reporter Li Huiying) reported on October 12 that the cold dew has arrived, the Chengdu Plain is still full of green, and in the crisp autumn season, the figure of giant panda foraging activities also frequently appears in the depths of the bamboo forest, and rare animals such as Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys, snow leopards, red pandas, and Sichuan takins coexist harmoniously with them, jointly interpreting the ecological balance of the Giant Panda National Park.

Since the official establishment of the Giant Panda National Park on October 12, 2021, this land has become home to 87% of the country's wild giant pandas, with rich biodiversity and unique natural and cultural landscapes, with a total area of 22,000 square kilometers, spanning Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.

Now, three years have passed, how has this panda secret realm changed?

Olympians took me on a tour of the Giant Panda National Park

After the first snowfall, the Chengdu area of the Giant Panda National Park is covered in snow, with fireworks bustling under the snow-capped mountains and ecological nature above the snow-capped mountains, showing a beautiful picture of harmonious coexistence.

Early in the morning of October 12, a patrol team composed of Deng Yawen, the champion of the women's freestyle BMX park race of the Paris Olympic Games, and Huang Zhang Jiayang, the all-around champion of the rhythmic gymnastics team, trekked with the rangers through the mountains and jungles in the Dayi area of the Giant Panda National Park, installing infrared cameras, looking for animal tracks, and observing the surrounding environment...... Walking along the rugged and muddy roads, through their perspectives, we are led into the Giant Panda National Park and experienced the patrol and conservation work first-hand.

Hosted by the Sichuan Provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau (Sichuan Provincial Administration of the Giant Panda National Park), undertaken by the Chengdu Management Branch of the Giant Panda National Park and the Dayi County People's Government, and supported by the Sichuan Provincial Sports Bureau, the event aims to combine the Olympic spirit with ecological protection, raise public awareness of giant panda conservation and biodiversity conservation, and jointly build a beautiful home of harmonious coexistence.

Sichuan Area: Explore a new path for the harmonious development of man and nature

Immerse yourself in the dense bamboo forest and feel the beauty of natural ecology; Standing on top of a mountain and feeling the harmony of all things is something that Olympic champions have never experienced before.

"Patrolling is a hard job, and it also makes us understand how difficult it is to protect the ecology." Deng Yawen said.

"The first time we walked into the national park, through the infrared camera, we saw a lot of animals, which shows that the environment here is very good, the ecology is very good, and each of us should protect it well." Huang Zhang Jiayang sighed.

The Sichuan area of the Giant Panda National Park covers a total area of 19,300 square kilometers, accounting for 88% of the total area of the park, with about 1,227 wild giant pandas, accounting for 91.6% of the total number of national parks, and more than 8,000 species of wild animals and plants such as Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys, green-tailed rainbow pheasants, dove trees, and yew trees.

In the Sichuan area, 1,588 giant panda traces have been recorded, and the population of giant pandas in the region has gradually increased, which represents a significant improvement in the ecological environment quality of giant panda habitats and effective protection of biodiversity. While protecting the natural ecology, the Sichuan area has coordinated the development of surrounding communities through the implementation of a number of friendly industries such as comprehensive eco-tourism services, ecological planting, and green processing industry, so that lucid waters and lush mountains can become "gold and silver mountains" that local residents rely on. With the deepening of the concept of national parks, the ecological and cultural influence of the Giant Panda National Park has increased year by year, and more and more people have become the builders and participants of the protection of the Giant Panda National Park.

Over the past three years, in order to maintain the integrity and authenticity of the giant panda habitat, the Sichuan area has always adhered to supporting high-quality development with a high-quality ecological environment, taking the high-quality construction of the Giant Panda National Park as an important starting point for building a solid ecological barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, and expanding the giant panda habitat as an important starting point for the protection of biodiversity. Establish a diversified investment mechanism, build a multi-party participation mechanism, strengthen scientific and technological support and guarantees, promote the coordinated development of the community and other measures to promote the work, and strive to explore a new path of modernization for the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.

Chengdu Area: Create a green model and lead the ecological future

"Look, that's where we've photographed panda mothers and babies many times." Pang Mingjian, the head of the Garlic Ping Protection Station, pointed to a colorful forest in the distance and said.

In recent years, in the Chengdu area of the Giant Panda National Park, "giant panda mother and child" have been photographed many times in the same frame, these precious images not only record the natural behavior of giant pandas, but also reflect the remarkable results of local conservation work, providing valuable information for the study and protection of this endangered species.

With a total area of about 1,445 square kilometers, the Chengdu area is located in the two major mountain systems of Qionglai Mountain and Minshan Mountain, which is a key corridor for gene exchange of giant panda populations, and plays an important role in building a complete ecological corridor of giant panda habitat and promoting the reproduction of giant panda populations. The survey results showed that there were 4227 species of higher plants (including cultivated species), 561 species of vertebrates of 5 classes, and 1132 species of insects of 17 orders, 131 families, 765 genera and 1132 species. According to the fourth national survey of wild giant pandas, there are now 73 wild giant pandas in the area.

Over the past three years, the Chengdu area has always been guided by the protection of rare flagship species such as the giant panda, with the goal of cultivating the ecological background of the park city, and exploring the formation of the "Chengdu model" of "standardization" of infrastructure construction, "scientific" ecosystem protection, and "standardization" of coordinated community development.

"Along the way, we have installed a lot of infrared cameras to collect plant, animal and human interference information, and now the intelligent monitoring system is perfect, it is more convenient to collect data, and the protection is more directional. During the journey, Pang Mingjian took off the infrared camera on the way to show everyone, and to everyone's surprise, in the image data, not only saw giant pandas, but also rare animals such as yellow-throated marten, blood pheasant, and Sichuan takin. In the past three years, the Chengdu area has continuously promoted the construction of "smart national parks", and the ecological intelligent monitoring network platform has been increasingly improved, with more than 100 wireless automatic infrared cameras and other monitoring points, realizing the visual management of monitoring equipment and allowing more people to see a more real "national park".

Not long ago, Pang Mingjian also participated in the task of investigating the snow leopard in Daxuetang, and speaking of snow leopards, he happily showed the snow leopards recently photographed in his mobile phone. As a dual-flagship species area with giant pandas and snow leopards, the Chengdu area continues to carry out background resource surveys and special surveys of snow leopards and other species, and has successively established cooperation mechanisms with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Sichuan University and other institutes to continue to carry out exchanges and cooperation in biodiversity conservation and nature education, providing theoretical support for the conservation of giant pandas and their habitats.

At this time, the Olympic champion and other people also came to the Xiling Snow Mountain Riyueping Observation Deck, overlooking the distance, the mountains are undulating, the clouds and mist are swirling, the layers of forests are dyed like a fairyland, and the white walls and green tiles hidden at the foot of the green mountains are the homes of the local residents, whose way of life is closely connected with the surrounding natural environment and depend on each other.

It is also one of the four entrance communities built in the Chengdu area.

The first is "settling down", with 8 co-construction and co-management committees and 600 ecological public welfare posts to ensure the lives of residents; followed by "establishment", original ecological products and industries, which drove the income of indigenous residents; The human-animal conflict early warning system and wildlife damage compensation mechanism have purchased wildlife accident compensation insurance with an insurance amount of 130 million yuan for more than 60,000 residents, which has made residents (including tourists) in the surrounding communities of the Giant Panda National Park feel more at ease.

The coming winter is the peak season for tourism in Xiling Snow Mountain, when the trinity of industry, community and giant panda habitat, different forms of industries such as characteristic culture, eco-tourism, panda cultural products, and planting and processing of characteristic agricultural products are planted and blossomed in the Chengdu area, which promotes each other and develops together, which may be the most tangible manifestation of the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

In the afternoon, everyone came to the Giant Panda National Park's Garlic Ping Conservation Station, a verdant-colored building that is hidden in the woods like bamboo, which is one of the standardized management and protection stations completed in the Chengdu area. Located at an altitude of 2,140 meters, Dalianping Protection Station is the first pilot station to improve the capacity of standardized management and protection stations in Chengdu Area, which is the highest altitude protection station in Chengdu Area and the most functional station in Chengdu Area.

In recent years, the Chengdu area has implemented the "Capacity Improvement Plan for Management and Conservation Personnel", improved the level of protection and management of personnel through various training activities, and took the lead in formulating a standardized construction plan in the province through the "Standardized Facility Construction Project", and now 7 standardized management and protection stations have been built. In the management and protection station, the video surveillance room, the forest fire prevention equipment library, and the science popularization and education center are all available, which can not only improve the efficiency and quality of the management and protection work, but also provide an excellent place for nature education.

In the past three years, the Giant Panda National Park has achieved a major transformation in the construction of national parks, which marks that people's understanding and practice of nature conservation have reached a new height, which is a new starting point and a new challenge for the Chengdu area of the Giant Panda National Park.

As one of the most important parts of the natural ecosystem, the most unique natural landscape, the most essence of natural heritage and the richest biodiversity, the Giant Panda National Park will carry more responsibilities and missions, not only to protect the giant panda and its umbrella......
