"I have had a face several times in my life... Not to make a laugh but to mourn. ”

Mr. Ye Jiaying suppressed the pain he had encountered in this life in this poem, just like the person who tasted a strong tea for the first time, above the mellow, it was endless bitterness.

Since she was a teenager, Ye Jiaying has experienced various hardships such as the turmoil of the times, the flames of war, and the changes in family roads, and later when she was young, she left her hometown and encountered the embarrassment of life.

In addition, Ye Jiaying's married life is also very unsmooth.

After her husband was released from prison, he often had angry emotions, and his attitude towards her was also very indifferent, and the coldness of the pillow person made him lose confidence in life for a while. Later, in an interview, Ye Jiaying once said: "Although I have a marriage, I have never experienced the taste of love. ”

The eighteen years of living in Taiwan were the hardest days in Ye Jiaying's life, but fortunately she persevered, because she always told herself in her heart:

"My whole life can be said to be played with and thrown by fate, but I don't fall, I want to go my own way in the bear." 」

So what suffering did Ye Jiaying experience in her turbulent and displaced life? How did she spend the days when she was beaten by her husband to fight cold violence?

Ye Jiaying: A life of ups and downs and displacement, after her husband's release from prison, her temperament changed greatly, a talented woman who was born with poetry as a companion for life entered the palace of marriage, her husband was released from prison, but her temperament changed greatly, but she heard the bad news of her daughter's death and returned to the motherland, returned to China for free teaching, and devoted herself to public welfare undertakings

talented daughter born into a famous family

In 1924, in a scholarly family in Beiping, Ye Jiaying was born, and Ye Jiaying was a descendant of the Mongolian flag man Yehenara clan.

Her grandfather was a Manchu translator during the Guangxu dynasty, a worker wailang. His father graduated from the English Department of Peking University and worked in the Aviation Administration of the Republic of China Government.

In such a family atmosphere, Ye Jiaying had already begun to memorize poems under the guidance of her family when she was illiterate, and she had been staying in the door of her home since she was a child, and her parents did not easily allow her to go out, and all her energy was spent on the endorsement at that time.

At the age of three, Ye Jiaying began to learn to distinguish the four voices with her parents; around the age of six, Ye Jiaying and her brother read and memorized the Analects with her aunt, which was also her enlightenment book, because she was still young, so Ye Jiaying just memorized it in her mind; when she was eleven years old, Ye Jiaying began to study poetry with her uncle who studied at Waseda University in Japan in the early years and was very fond of poetry and synonymous.

When other children were playing and playing in the alley, Ye Jiaying silently moved her own small bench and sat in the courtyard reciting Tang poems. Under the guidance of her uncle, the various landscapes of the family courtyard have become the main themes of Ye Jiaying's poems, including bamboo, jujube flowers, sunsets, and remnant moons.

In the poem, whether it is writing about the jujube flowers in summer or the chrysanthemums in autumn, Ye Jiaying can show the bright side of her girlish heart.

Growing up in a strong family culture atmosphere, Ye Jiaying's academic performance is naturally very good, in her fifth grade, her father sent Ye Jiaying to a church school to study, where students will start to learn English in the fifth grade, and her father hopes that Ye Jiaying can master English from an early age.

In 1937, when Ye Jiaying was in the second grade of junior high school, the Lugou Bridge Incident broke out. After the fall of Beijing, Ye Jiaying's father retreated to Wuhan with the Nationalist government's airlines.

However, with the continuous bombardment of the Japanese army, Wuhan could not stay any longer, so they continued to retreat to Chongqing, and it was also from this time that Ye Jiaying's family lost contact with their father.

In 1941, at the age of 17, Ye Jiaying was admitted to Fu Jen University. At that time, Peiping had been occupied by Japan for nearly four years since the fall of Peiping, and Fu Jen University was the so-called public university in the occupied area at that time, so here, Ye Jiaying's family could be blessed.

In September, Ye Jiaying's mother fell ill with cancer. She was hospitalized urgently, but unfortunately, her mother died after the operation. Her father had no news, her mother had died of illness, and the early death of her relatives had brought a heavy blow to Ye Jiaying, and it was from this time that Ye Jiaying gradually understood the cold and warm of the human world.

As the eldest in the family, Ye Jiaying also has two younger brothers to take care of. The youngest brother was nine years younger than her, and Ye Jiaying had to dress her little brother every morning to send him to school. The brothers and sisters had a very hard time at that time, sometimes they could not eat white rice and white noodles for several months, and the most frequently eaten was the cheapest mixed noodles.

However, here, Ye Jiaying met many talented and learned teachers, and the teacher who had the greatest influence on Ye Jiaying was Gu Sui, the teacher of Tang Song poetry.

Gu Sui

Ye Jiaying is very fond of Gu Sui's teaching style, he has never been limited to doing simple translations of some words and sentences, but more deeply conveys the beauty of poetry.

It can be summed up as "the side of the signs, the excitement will be vivid, the touch play, all have a wonderful meaning." Therefore, he often associated self-cultivation with poetry, which had a great influence on Ye Jiaying and became a feature of her teaching after being a teacher.

entered the palace of marriage and left home

In 1945, after graduating from university, Ye Jiaying began to teach in Beiping Youzhen Girls' Middle School, Zhicheng Girls' Middle School, and Huaguang Girls' Middle School, because she was deeply influenced by Gu Sui's teacher during her studies, so this actually made Ye Jiaying form a unique style in her own classroom, which left a deep impression on many students.

In 1948, after the introduction of the middle school teacher, Ye Jiaying got acquainted with Zhao Dongsun, and Ye Jiaying, who had never been in love, did not know what it was like to be in love. However, because Zhao Dongsun was the younger brother of a middle school teacher, Ye Jiaying, who was simple-minded, could not refuse this introduction, so she and Zhao Dongsun slowly had exchanges.

With the mutual understanding of the two, Zhao Dongsun liked the talented Ye Jiaying very much, so he often ran to Ye Jiaying's city to visit her.

After Zhao Dongsun lost his job, he came to Beiping to live in the same city as Ye Jiaying, and Ye Jiaying could not bear to see Zhao Dongsun in such a predicament. Sometimes he would use his savings to help him, and from time to time he would encourage Zhao Dongsun to cheer up.

Later, Under the introduction of his relatives at home, Zhao Dongsun entered the Kuomintang Naval School in Nanjing as a navy. Before going to Nanjing, Zhao Dongsun proposed to Ye Jiaying, and although the family was not particularly satisfied with the marriage, Ye Jiaying, who was full of kindness, agreed. After marriage, Ye Jiaying followed her husband Zhao Dongsun to Nanjing to take up a post.

The situation was uncertain, Ye Jiaying, as a family member, left her hometown with her husband and moved to Taiwan, when Ye Jiaying was pregnant, and in the summer of 1949, the first daughter of the two was born.

At the same time, the entire Taiwan region was covered with white terror, and many people who followed the Nationalist army to Taiwan were branded as communists and suffered political persecution. In December of that year, Zhao Dongsun was arrested and imprisoned for not escaping the disaster, and as a family member of Zhao Dongsun, Ye Jiaying was also imprisoned with her daughter, who was only a few months old.

Because Ye Jiaying had never participated in political activities and only taught at school, she and her daughter were soon released, but after being released from prison, how Ye Jiaying and her daughter should live became a new problem. Because at that time, the place where they had just arrived in Taiwan had been taken away.

In desperation, Ye Jiaying could only find a friend for help, because there was no extra room in the friend's home to spare for her and her daughter who was a few months old, so they could only temporarily live in the small living room of the friend's home.

At that time, Ye Jiaying only covered a blanket every day to curl up her body, gently patted the young girl in her arms, and swallowed the sad tears alone in the middle of the night. Ye Jiaying was just 27 years old that year, but she had already suffered a life of displacement and scattered relatives.

For the sake of her own and her daughter's life, Ye Jiaying can only take her young daughter on the road to lecture every day, in order to earn a little more money, Ye Jiaying sometimes needs to carry out multiple tossing and turning between multiple schools.

husband out of prison, his temperament changed dramatically

In 1952, After three years in prison, Zhao Dongsun was finally released from prison, and Ye Jiaying thought that the family was finally reunited, and her daughter finally had her father around to take care of her.

But he did not think that after returning from prison, Zhao Dongsun's temperament changed greatly, his temper became very grumpy, he was reluctant to look for a job at home all day, and he was also picky about his wife Ye Jiaying's "problems" everywhere, either disgusted that she did not cook delicious food, or disliked Ye Jiaying for not giving him a son, and the words were full of aggressive tone.

For the sake of her young daughter and father, Ye Jiaying did not want to have any dispute with Zhao Dongsun, so in the face of his unreasonable trouble, Ye Jiaying could only bear it alone. In the second year after Zhao Dongsun was released from prison, Ye Jiaying became pregnant again, and she wanted to rely on the birth of the child to ease the atmosphere in the family a little, but her ruthless husband left her alone in the hospital when Ye Jiaying was about to give birth.

In the face of her husband's indifference and reprimand to herself, Ye Jiaying chose to stand up her thin body to show her calmness, and she gave birth to her second daughter YanHui in the hospital alone. The birth of her daughter also gave Ye Jiaying new strength, she became more and more frustrated, shook hands with the misfortunes in life, and sought love for life.

No matter how self-destructive Zhao Dongsun is, Ye Jiaying always has her own pursuits, she has always been accompanied by poetry, and in the world of poetry, Ye Jiaying slowly ignored the unreasonable teasing of her husband Zhao Dongsun.

teaching abroad but heard the bad news of her daughter's death

In the nourishment of classical poetry, Ye Jiaying also gradually perked up, because she firmly believes that poetry can soothe the wounded soul, so during the teaching period, Ye Jiaying collected a lot of teaching materials, audio and video recordings, notebooks and so on.

In 1954, Ye Jiaying, who had outstanding teaching ability, was hired to teach at National Taiwan University, where she taught her favorite and best classical poetry. It was also from this time that Ye Jiaying's fame gradually became popular in Taiwanese literary circles.

In 1966, Ye Jiaying was sent to Teach in North America by National Taiwan University, which was also the first time that Ye Jiaying left after living in Taiwan for eighteen years. Ye Jiaying has experienced a short teaching career at Michigan State University and Harvard University, and as soon as she arrived abroad, Ye Jiaying will start teaching in English.

However, the mood of Chinese poetry is difficult to describe in English, and Ye Jiaying's spoken language is not particularly good, so the day before she teaches, she will first check the new words on her teaching plan before she is willing to sleep with peace of mind.

When the next day of class, Ye Jiaying used the English she had learned in advance to tell the students with strokes and strokes. Although there are many restrictions on language, Ye Jiaying is still able to explain classical Chinese poetry very vividly and interestingly.

At first, only sixteen or seven students came to listen to Ye Jiaying's course, and then it slowly increased to sixty or seventy. Moreover, Ye Jiaying also became one of the few Chinese scholars at that time who could teach classical Chinese poetry in English.

Ye Jiaying not only focused on the teaching of nurturing Tao Li, but also cooperated with Mr. Hai Taowei, the head of the Asian Department of Harvard University, to engage in some research on classical literature and attended important international academic conferences.

In 1969, because of her outstanding and unique teaching style, Ye Jiaying was awarded a lifetime letter of appointment from the University of British Columbia in Canada. Ye Jiaying, who got this opportunity, immediately went with her family and settled in Vancouver, Canada.

But unfortunate things followed, in 1976, Ye Jiaying's eldest daughter Yan Yan and her husband, who had been married for three years, encountered a serious car accident while driving, and the two died on the spot. Hearing this bad news, Ye Jiaying instantly felt that her world had collapsed, and her daughter's death gave her a heavy blow, so after taking care of the aftermath of her daughter and son-in-law, Ye Jiaying locked herself up at home and washed her face with tears every day.

Ye Jiaying isolated herself from the outside world, but soon after a news item in the newspaper caught her attention and opened another door for Ye Jiaying to shine.

Ye Jiaying: A life of ups and downs and displacement, after her husband's release from prison, her temperament changed greatly, a talented woman who was born with poetry as a companion for life entered the palace of marriage, her husband was released from prison, but her temperament changed greatly, but she heard the bad news of her daughter's death and returned to the motherland, returned to China for free teaching, and devoted herself to public welfare undertakings

return to the motherland and teach for free

In 1978, when Ye Jiaying was resting at home, she happened to see a domestic news in a newspaper, which was a message about recruiting teachers.

At that time, Ye Jiaying immediately wrote a letter to the Chinese Ministry of Education, saying that she was willing to use the vacation time to return to China to teach, and that she would pay for her travel expenses, and did not want the state's remuneration, teaching for free.

Ye Jiaying said: "Only returning to China to teach is my only choice, my own choice for a lifetime. ”

Ye Jiaying has been teaching overseas for so many years, and she has always lamented that teaching in English often cannot express the rhyme of classical Chinese poetry, and she is also quite limited when explaining to students.

Therefore, teaching classical Chinese poetry in Chinese on the territory of the motherland was Ye Jiaying's long-standing wish, and finally in the spring of 1979, the state agreed to Ye Jiaying's request and arranged for Ye Jiaying to go to Peking University to teach.

After many years, Ye Jiaying, who returned to China to teach, took this opportunity very seriously, and she also specially entrusted someone to buy a blue Chinese people's costume from Hong Kong and wear this new dress to teach the students.

In the impression of the students, Ye Jiaying never took the lecture script used in the class when she lectured, she always wrote the text as she went, from right to left, neatly arranged on the blackboard, this unique habit was also learned by Ye Jiaying from her mentor Mr. Gu Sui.

Because of her skin's allergy to chalk, Ye Jiaying often put tape on her hands, but during the teaching period, her hands would still crack due to too much chalk exposure.

Every time Ye Jiaying gave a lecture to a student, she had to stand for about two or three hours, and her way of speaking poetry was obviously different from other teachers, other teachers seemed to be reading poetry, while Ye Jiaying was more inclined to sing poetry.

In particular, she advocates paying attention to the peace when reading poems, and experiencing and feeling the unique rhythm and artistic beauty of classical Chinese poetry through pure chanting. Taking the initiative to return to China to teach is the only active choice that Ye Jiaying has ever made in her life, because in her life, her husband is not her active choice, she left her hometown to go to Taiwan is not her choice, and it is even more forced to go to the United States and Canada to teach.

Therefore, for this opportunity, Ye Jiaying is very precious, she also said: "I will continue to work hard to fulfill the responsibility of teachers, I want to pass on the beautiful spirit of our country, nation and culture, do not cut it off." ”

returned to China to settle down and devote themselves to public welfare undertakings

Since 1979, Ye Jiaying has been teaching in dozens of colleges and universities in China, and it was not until 2014 that Ye Jiaying officially returned to China to settle down.

Regarding the teaching and promotion of classical Chinese poetry, Mr. Ye Jiaying has a sense of urgency that the time is not waiting, so she has also increased the frequency of her lectures and lectures throughout the country.

To this end, Ye Jiaying also said:

"All I have to do is open a door and bring in people who don't understand poetry. My life's ambition is to pass on beautiful poetry to the next generation. ”

In order to maintain the lifeblood and fire of classical poetry, Ye Jiaying also sold her two properties in Beijing and Tianjin in her later years, and also donated all the manuscript fees and royalty income she had raised to the Nankai University Education Foundation for the establishment of the "Jialing Fund".

Ye Jiaying did not take the initiative to pursue anything in her life, and when faced with injustice and suffering, she could only do her best to bear it and use her tenacity to take root in this land.

So such a good scholar, no matter where life or marriage leaves her, she will be in that place, using her own strength to do what should be done.
