Petofi (1823-1849), originally translated as Peter Fir, the great Hungarian revolutionary poet and founder of Hungarian national literature, was hailed as "a thorny rose that grew in the fertile black soil soaked in the blood of slaves", and died at the age of 26 in the Bloody Battle of Sirkesburg against the Russian army.
