After decades of skimpy (小而暴露的) skirts and steeveless (無袖的) tops on game days, some schools in the US are saying cheerleader uniforms will have to meet stricter dress codes when they are worn in class.

In Lake County, Florida, cheerleaders with uniforms too skimpy for the code are being asked to wear long shorts or trousers under their skirts and a Tshirt under the sleeveless tops, according to a district memo (備忘錄). Principals at two of Lake's eight high schools — Leesburg and Lake Minneolaare not allowing the outfits (服裝) in school at all.

Michelle Thomas, a cheerleader at Leesburg High School, was disappointed when she learned she couldn't wear her outfit to school on game days.

“It shows that we're a team just like all the other sports,” she said.

But the school administrators did not agree. “During the educational portion (部分) of the day, they have to meet the dress code just like every other student,“ said school board chairwoman Debbie Stivender, who ordered the staff to bring the outfits into line with the dress code.

Bare midriffs (露腰裝) are banned across the state by the Florida High School Athletic Association, but no state rules mention cheerleader miniskirts. Sheila Noone, a spokeswoman for cheerleading uniform pany Varsity Brands, says the outfits haven't bee more revealing (暴露的) over the last 10 years. She says that the short skirts are designed to help the girls jump and kick.

“Cheerleading is athletic(充滿運動活力的),”Noone said. “There's a lot of jumping, so you won't want a knee length skirt that might hamper (妨礙) a toe touch.”

Most cheerleaders were sad to hear the news, but say they'll follow the rules. Even male cheerleaders, whose pants and tops meet dress codes, chose not to wear their outfits to show unity.

“I understand, because they are kind of short,” said Holly Bishop, 14, a Lake Minneola High School cheerleader, about her miniskirt. “It would've been really, really cool to wear them to school.”

Robots have proved to be valuable tools for soldiers, surgeons and homeowners hoping to keep the carpet clean. But in each case, they are designed and built specifically for the job. Now there is a movement under way to build multipurpose machines—robots that can move about in changing environments such as offices or living rooms and work with their hands.

Allpurpose robots are not, of course, a new idea. “It's been 5 or 10 years from happening for about 50 years,” says Eric Berger, codirector of the Personal Robotics Program at Willow Garage, a Silicon Valley organization. The delay is in part because even simple tasks require a huge set of capabilities. For a robot to fetch a mug, for example, it needs to make sense of data gathered by a variety of sensors—laser scanners identifying potential blocking objects, cameras searching for the target, force feedback in the fingers that grasp the mug, and more. Yet Berger and other experts are confident that real progress could be made in the next decade.

The problem, according to Willow Garage, is the lack of a mon platform for all that putational effort. Instead of enlarging the capabilities of a single machine, everyone is designing robots and the software to control them, from the ground up. To help change this, Willow Garage is currently producing 25 copies of its model PR2 ( Personal Robot 2), a twoarmed, wheeled machine that can switch off the electricity, open doors and move through a room. Ten of the robots will stay inhouse, but 10 more will go to outside research groups, and everyone will share their advances. This way, Berger says, if you want to build the robotic equivalent (等同物) of a Twitter, you won't start by constructing a puter. “You build the thing that's new.”
