Do not worry! Babies are born to feed, and breastfeeding – the beginning of breastfeeding

In life, we have seen other mammalian pups actively look for their mother's nipples after birth and hold the process of sucking. These are the instincts of mammalian babies, the magical forces of nature.

Human newborn babies also have this instinct. That is to say, when the newborn is in the mother's chest and abdomen to make skin contact, the baby can crawl on its own to find the mother's breast and start to feed. This is what clinical midwives often call "milk crawling".

In 2013, the WHO developed and published guidelines for early neonatal basic care (EENC), which clearly state that newborns are thoroughly wiped dry immediately after birth, immediately begin skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby for at least 90 minutes, complete the first breastfeeding, delay umbilical cord ligation until 1-3 minutes after birth, and delay bathing for 24 hours after birth.

How do midwives do it?

When the baby is about to be delivered, we spread a large non-woven sterile towel (textured like the disposable face wash towel you usually use) on the mother's chest and abdomen. The midwife places the baby directly between the mother's legs into a soft sterile towel.

The midwife quickly dried the baby's whole body and removed the wipes, covered the baby and the mother with a small quilt, cleaned the mucus of the baby's mouth and nose, made sure that the baby's mouth and nose were not covered, and completely let the mother and child (daughter) hold each other together in peace. Every time that happens, the pH of my nose starts to drop. Looking at the mother and baby, it was the most beautiful painting.

Mother's nipples are pigmented and deeper in color in the third trimester. Do you know? This is because newborn babies have poor vision, so the color of our areola is deepened to help the baby locate.

Babies have a keen sense of smell and can find breasts and nipples through amniotic fluid-like substances of Montgomery glands on the areola. This first sip of milk is of great significance, not only does the colostrum form a good protective barrier in the baby's gastrointestinal tract, but it can also stimulate the mother's breast and make the brain secrete more prolactin, breastfeeding is more successful.

Data from studies have shown that mothers who successfully breastfeed within 1 hour after giving birth have 2.2 times more milk in the 2 weeks after childbirth than mothers who did not feed their first milk. (Especially in the context of the globalization of the NEW CROWN epidemic, the safety of breastfeeding is far greater than that of formula feeding).

Your baby is awake within 2 hours of giving birth and can suck frequently. Often after the first breastfeeding, the baby will enter a deep sleep state, and there will be frequent sucking and sleep alternating states after that. So precious skin early contact, with waiting for the baby to breastfeed is very valuable. We all need some patience for the mother, for the baby. Less intervention, more patience, more waiting.

Note: After labor analgesic anesthesia is used in childbirth, it is likely that the baby's milk crawl is not, or is not obvious. Babies tend to be lazy, unlike babies who don't have to give birth to analgesia, and have a clear sense of curiosity about the world.
