5, India's new car sales rose in fiscal 2022, but car companies issued a warning of supply cuts

According to foreign media reports, Indian automakers reported on April 1 that the country's new car sales have risen sharply in fiscal 2022, but they have also warned of the risk of global supply chain disruption in the future.

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest automaker, said the company's sales rose 13 percent to 1.65 million units in fiscal year 2022 ended March 31, the first increase in two years. But the company warned: "The supply of electronic components remains unpredictable." The company said in a statement that the supply cut of parts could have a "certain impact" on the company's production in the current fiscal year. Maruti is owned by Japanese automaker Suzuki and has a 50% market share in India.

Over the past year, global automakers have been forced to slash production due to disruptions in supply chains and a severe shortage of semiconductors due to booming demand from consumer electronics, which has led to a long waiting time for consumers to pick up a new car.

Indian rating agency ICRA said the current situation in Russia and Ukraine is expected to exacerbate the problem, as both countries provide raw materials for making semiconductors. "The crisis, in the form of rising fuel and commodity prices, also poses a threat to the prospect of demand for cars, which is feared to turn into a lengthy war," the agency said. ”

Another Indian automaker, Tata Motors, set a new record in sales in FY2022, rising 67 percent to 370,372 units. The company said in a statement that despite "two waves of the pandemic, a semiconductor supply crisis and a sharp rise in costs," sales of its electric vehicles have nearly quadrupled to 19,000 units. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Passenger Cars and Tata Passenger Electric Vehicles, said: "The future of semiconductor supply remains uncertain. We will continue to pay close attention to the changing situation. (Source: Gestapo Nebula)
