It was learned from China Southern Power Grid Corporation that a few days ago, as the world's largest pumped storage power station built at one time, Guangdong Huizhou Pumped Storage Power Station has generated more than 30 billion kilowatt hours of cumulative power generation, continuing to provide stable and clean electricity for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Huizhou Pumped Storage Power Station, located in Boluo County, Huizhou, Guangdong, has an installed capacity of 2.4 million kilowatts, and installed eight large-scale pumped storage units of 300,000 kilowatts, which were put into operation in May 2009. "In the 16 years of operation of the power station, the unit has been safely started more than 100,000 times, and a total of 30.07 billion kWh of clean electricity has been generated, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 13.6 million residential users in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, corresponding to a reduction of 38 million tons of carbon dioxide," said Cao Yunpeng, chairman of Huizhou Energy Storage and Power Generation Company of China Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Company.
The pumped storage power station is mainly composed of two reservoirs and a unit plant, and the power system uses electricity to pump water when the load is low, and releases water to generate electricity during the peak, which requires the unit to have both motor and generator functions. Compared with conventional hydropower units, pumped storage units are more difficult to produce and manufacture, and the mainland started late in this field.

The accumulation of experience in the construction and operation of Huizhou pumped storage power station has laid a solid foundation for the independent and controllable core technology of pumped storage in mainland China. At present, the scale of pumped storage power stations in operation and under construction in mainland China ranks first in the world, and key technologies and equipment have been industrialized nationwide. It is estimated that by 2027, the scale of pumped storage power stations in mainland China will reach more than 80 million kilowatts, which will significantly improve the regulation capacity of the power system and effectively help the construction of new power systems and new energy systems.
