CAMM2 technology has great potential in the notebook space, but it's unclear if it will work on desktops.

At Computex 2024, we saw a brand new memory specification – LPCAMM2. Memory manufacturer Micron featured it frequently at the show and was excited to be the first to bring the memory specification to market.

The appearance of the LPCAMM2 resembles a flat memory suite. It provides the replaceable benefits of soldered memory, while also allowing users to replace the memory themselves. As a result, it is seen as the perfect solution for the next generation of thin and light laptops. The Crucial brand pioneered the 32GB and 64GB LPCAMM2 memory packages.

In the past, SO-DIMM memory modules were thought to take up too much space, so manufacturers started experimenting with soldering memory directly to the motherboard. However, the downside of this approach is that the user needs to determine the memory configuration at the time of purchase.

LPCAMM2 technology cleverly solves this problem. If the price of LPCAMM2 modules can be kept relatively reasonable with SO-DIMMs or soldered memory, users will benefit from buying a laptop with LPCAMM2.

Micron believes that LPCAMM2 is extremely competitive in price: one LPCAMM2 module can replace two SO-DIMM modules, thus halving the number of non-memory components. Micron also expects it to reduce the complexity of the motherboard, but it really depends on the motherboard manufacturer. I have reservations about the argument that Micron presents, arguing that even though LPCAMM2 is more expensive, manufacturers can weigh the extra cost against the added value that AI brings to PCs.

Today's LPCAMM2 memory kits are much more expensive than standard SO-DIMM memory, but this is often the case with new technologies.

Vaidyanathan believes that LPCAMM2 has an advantage in terms of both bandwidth and capacity because it is easy to scale to higher capacities, is naturally dual-channel, and runs faster than many DDR5 SO-DIMMs in the first place. However, he believes that the most critical factor is power consumption.

Up to 60% less power than comparable DDR5 memory...... Are manufacturers going to start installing fans in every laptop? Nowadays, everyone is pursuing fanless designs. As a result, power consumption is going to be a big issue, which is why we think LPCAMM2 will really outperform DDR5 in the coming years.

Also available at Computex is CAMM2 memory for desktops, such as Kingston's latest products. These kits install DDR5 memory chips, replacing LPDDR5X.

This is an interesting use case. On the one hand, efficient memory can run at high speeds and is able to cool chips directly more efficiently, leading to greater potential. You can install a heatsink on the CAMM2 just like you would a CPU. DIMM memory, on the other hand, is simple and easy to use, and gaming PC manufacturers often don't care much about efficiency.

More power, more performance – why the gaming PC market is so easy to see compared to thin and light laptops. However, as AMD desktop processors move towards greater efficiency, Intel's Arrow Lake architecture is also likely to adopt more energy-efficient designs, and I suspect that in the near future, we will see more energy-efficient products emerge.
