Born on 26 December 1964 in Hong Kong, China, Lo Wai-kai graduated from the Department of Industrial Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1984. In 1987, he graduated United Kingdom from the Royal College of Art in London with a master's degree in automotive design.

In 1987, he joined Lotus Motor Company in United Kingdom and began his career as a car designer. At Lotus, he designed Lotus Carlton, and he was also involved in a collaboration between United Kingdom's Lotus and Japan's Isuzu 4200R concept car.

In 1990, he joined Audi Germany and worked on the design of the Audi AVUS Quattro concept car. The Audi W12 engine, a high-strength all-aluminum supercar with a paintless polished body, was a forward-looking exploration of Audi's later aluminum body technology and design, including the Audi A8.
