Intercepted European elm beetle

Weihai, 25 Jul (Reporter Yu Jianmei Correspondent Li Chunxi) Recently, when the Weihai Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in Shandong Province was quarantined on a batch of beech logs from Japan, it intercepted several insects, which were identified by laboratory quarantine as European elm beetles, four-banded thorn-tailed tiger tianniu, valley ant-shaped armor, and big-eyed valley thieves. Among them, the European elm beetle (Scolytus multistriatus) is a quarantine pest and has been intercepted for the first time at the Weihai port. In order to prevent the introduction of the epidemic, the Weihai Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has carried out strict quarantine supervision and treatment of the logs, and strengthened the entry quarantine of logs entering the country from the epidemic area.

It is reported that the European elm beetle is currently mainly distributed in the United States, Canada and Europe and other countries and regions, which is the first interception from the beech wood imported from Japan. It mainly harms elm trees, but also endangers poplar trees, plum trees, oak trees, oriental beech and other tree species. This pest can burrow into the phloem of poplar trees for feeding, and can spread the devastating elm disease of elm wilt, causing a large number of tree deaths. At present, this kind of pest is not yet distributed in China, the quarantine risk is extremely large, once introduced, it will cause serious threats to China's forestry production, ecological environment and so on.
